Blooms From The Back 40

Thanks as always to May Dreams Garden Blog for hosting Bloom Day June 2012.  Happy Bloom Day to all!

Most every garden has a "back 40", or "Siberia" or what ever you call it--the place where you plant your mistakes, your failures, the rose that rabbits chewed up once too often, the disappointing day lily, the loathsome fern Great Aunt Mildred gave you, Great Aunt Mildred who can't remember your name anymore, but remembers the fern she gave you, and asks about it frequently.
The disappointing day lily:

Well this Clematis deserves better, anyway.

I stuck an orchid back on the pergola about 2008, along with an 'Alison Blackman' Phormium and red Anigozanthos.  The Anigozanthos gave up last year, the Phormium is hanging on.

I've checked the orchid every so often for years to see if it has died yet.  No, not yet.  I was completely surprised yesterday to see that it was blooming, probably for the first time since about 2002.

Huh.  How about that!

Nearby is a rose that's been producing a spring flush of exactly one flower for six years.  This year, it's been nearly prolific.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Plants.  Trying hard to make the "back 40" a more beautiful place, whether the gardener loves them or not.

  1. Lovely Orchid.

I like the idea of the back 40, although given that my garden would inside you back 40 twice, I need to get a front 40 first.

  3. @Spiky, thanks. I hope you get your "front 40" and "back 40". I believe the May Dreams Garden Blog calls their "back 40" "plopper's field"--good name!

@Greggo, you betcha there are Cercis seedlings back there! Grrrr!!!!

  5. The unloved things we can't quite heave will sometimes surprise us.

Although I do have some bloomers, I'm suffering from blossom envy this month, and your flowers are only adding to that. Your "back 40" space looks delightfully private. I have privacy envy, too.

  6. You back 40 looks lovely! Isn't it funny how plants always seem to know what we're thinking? I guess they figured if they're in the 'back 40' they better start performing, or the next stop may be the compost bin!
