Monday Miscellany

Smile!  It's Monday!

Monday I'm always disorganized, so a good day for miscellany.  There are some bits of the garden I never photograph because the lighting is bad, or the backgrounds are bad.   I ignore the beautiful Sprekelia flowers because they are either in deep shade or harsh overhead sun.
Photobucket
Too bad; such a lovely bloom, even in harsh sun.

I have to stand on top of a wall to look from this angle, not too safe, and this is also either harsh overhead sun or deep shade.  Star Jasmine, Phormium 'Guardsman', and the rose is 'Mrs. B. R. Cant'.
Photobucket
I need to figure out how to get a decent shot of the Yucca 'Color Guard' flower.  This one has a bad background and bad lighting.
Photobucket
'Bright Star' is looking fabulously lit against a great background.
Photobucket
Not enough Sprekelia pictures, too many of 'Belinda's Dream'.  But it looks like this so consistantly, I can't help it.  This is the early June flush, as usual better than the April one.  The late July flush will be great, but not as wonderful as the early September one, although the mid-October flush is usually the best, though sometimes it is outdone by the one in December.

Haven't mentioned the koi for a long time.  They're fine.  Bigger.  I need to solve the UV problem.

The bulbils on the blooming Agaves are getting larger, while the mother plants are continuing to shrink, yellow, and dry.  Some of the bulbils are over 3" (~8 cm) long.
Photobucket
I never take many photos of 'Gemini', either.  The light is never right, and the blotchy quality of the coral color puts me off.

Saw my very first in-person example of Crepe Murder yesterday.  Crepe Murder is well known in the Southeaster US--people hack their Lagerstroemias (Crepe Myrtles) in all sorts of terrible ways, and this is known as "Crepe Murder".  You would think with all the terrible pruning examples here, we'd be Crepe-murdering too, but this is the first example I've ever come across locally.  Here the standard method is removing the spent blooms, plus light shaping and and thinning, which preserves the natural beauty of the tree.  How odd that the standard method here is...correct!
Not correct:  someone just cut the top off and weaker growth has re-sprouted:

And what have the puppies been doing with their bright and shiny teeth?
Photobucket
Yep, it's Monday alright.  The puppies are focused, while I am not.

I don't know about this new format thing.  I thought I would try it out.  Sort of like it, sort of don't.  What do you think?

  1. Entertaining miscellany with a nice mix of photos! Yucca 'Bright Star' is a nice plant isn't it? It does what it's name says...bright! And good to see your Koi too :)

  2. For the Yucca 'Color Guard', have you tried forcing the flash on? Although I almost never use a flash, it might be just the ticket in this case, especially if you can turn down the intensity of it in your camera.

What's the UV issue with the fish?

(I don't know if I like the new format either... it's not terrible though.)

  3. Great updates on all the white fur, roses, etc. Crepe murder is everywhere, I guess. Here, most everything is murdered or neglected, so it can always be worse.

New format - I like your template or layout - your's is more user-friendly than other new ones I've seen. Getting ready to change mine, or move it elsewhere, so I have to look to see what works better on others' sites. Thx for sharing.

  4. Love the shot of the bulbils...

My computer doesn't like your new format. I could read it fine in Google Reader but when I opened this post to comment all I got was a black screen. Must just be my issue though since nobody else has mentioned it. (I finally got around it by clicking on "classic")

  5. I mostly don't like the new format, but maybe it's just because I'm used to the "old" one, and really don't appreciate change for no apparent reason.

  6. First , let me thank you for mentioning unattractive color breaks in roses. I've dug up numerous very perfectly vigorous roses because I couldn't bear the look of the mature flowers.I Feel less guilty now.

A little confused on the format, at first I thought something was wrong.

  8. Had a bit of trouble opening this post at first, but your new format seems to have settled down now. Quite like it, I see the puppies still like a good chew.
