Lily 'Costa Mesa'

Planted at the end of April, the first of the new lilies has bloomed. Tenatively named 'Costa Mesa'. I wonder if the greenish cast will hold.

Happy New Year?

'Easy Does It' Happy New Year? I'm hoping. In the meantime, the winter light this past Tuesday was marvelous--just enough of a thin cloud cover to bring out the richest colors without all the bleaching we get in summer. So, just some photos, mostly Aloes, and a rose or two. Leucadendron 'Wilson's Wonder' colored up very suddenly last week: My favorite moment for Aloe flowers: the day before the first individual flowers open. They look pristine. A. candelabrum: Alligator Lizard among the Hellebores. Their showy time of year will arrive soon. January: Rose Pruning Time

'Francis Meilland' After some very warm and constantly windy weather, at times hot enough to drive me indoors after a few minutes outside--suddenly the roses seem to be telling me it was pruning time: leaf buds swelling rapidly. So I snapped out of whatever funk I've been stuck in lately and got to it, including clean up of other plants as well. Hydrangeas Salvias and Cupheas got the chop. And old Gerbera, Alstroemeria, and Hellebore foliage to pull. Here's one area looking (somewhat) ready for spring. Still a big clump of Dahlia under that tomato cage to be dug and dumped, then replaced by a rose. Replaced by one of several roses waiting in pots: a pair of 'Tamora', a 'Moondance', and 'Pink Gruss an Aachen'. 'Tamora', probably. Since summer is awful enough without feeling miserable about failing, flowerless, wretched-looking Dahlias, all Dahlias in the garden are being dug and discarded, to be replaced this coming summe...

What's Up With Aloes

The rain we got in October and November made the xeric portions of the garden quite beautiful. 7 months of dust washed away, and new growth from everything. More flower stems on the Aloes than is usual. Our Second Spring is Fall I managed to get up on the front slope to inspect Aloe 'Eric The Red', which appeared to have an Aloe gall mite infestation. It did: an extensive one. I yanked 'Eric' out, along with the trash palm seedling that had sprouted next to it. Into the bin with you! The winter's Aloe show begins. Some starting to show color and open, and new flower stems emerging--color yet to come. A. candelabrum: A. candelabrum's companion--fellow South African Protea 'Claire': Stems emerge on A. castanea: Nearby, behind Kalachoe beharensis, is Arctostaphylos 'Austin Griffiths' in full flower: The flowers are tiny, the size of peas, but there are hundreds of them: A. 'Hellskloof Bells' flowered last summer, but the foliage...
