Alan Asked About The Roses (Part 2)

I continue with a list of roses in the garden, while I'm out there pruning them, and pruning, and pruning...Yesterday was "A" and "B".  Today is "C", "D", and some of "E".

  1. 'Ebb Tide': I didn't know that color was possible!

I am going to have so many questions when the parade is finished. Actually, I'll ask now, because maybe you can start including some of this info... how do each of these rate with fragrance? How much trouble are they (disease for instance)? When do they bloom, and for how long?

    1. I'll add a few comments for each. Of course here they mostly all bloom March - January, and take about 6 wees to start blooming again after January pruning.

Yes, 'Ebb Tide' is amazing color if you give it some afternoon shade. Otherwise it can get rather magenta if the light is too strong.

  2. What a great collection of roses, how many do you have in total? How big is your garden?
I looked up all the roses from your first rose post and only two of them were available to buy here in Britain. I guess that's the problem with many plants, they are not always readily available all over the world.
'Ebb Tide' is surely an unusual colour!

    1. A lot, part of the posting purpose is to figure out how many, though I think I've already missed a few. A half-acre (2000 square meters), but a good amount of that is wasted on the house.

    2. Lol "wasted on the house"! Spoken like a true gardener. :) thank you for blogging, I enjoy your posts so much! Geetha

  3. Aaah, and the eye candy continues :-)! The color of 'Ebb Tide' is absolutely stunning! So nice that you have enough room in your garden to give 'Crepuscule' the space to be able to stretch out her legs. Usually you don't see roses of this size in private gardens and it is so lovely when you do! Happy rose pruning! I have some time to go out there and do some rose pruning today too, and will use your photos as motivation.

    1. I'm afraid them (and the pruning) are going to continue for a while. Enjoy your gardening on this beautiful sunny day.

  4. Beautiful post, Hoov, what a great idea to do it (maybe I will steal it for my blog some time too).

  5. I'm astounded by the sheer number of roses you must have. I had no idea, even though you often feature them. Some of these colors are just amazing (and Disneyland looks aptly named.)

  6. After just visiting the Denver botanic Gardens earlier (incredible even in winter), now your roses (esp. Day Breaker and Disneyland), I think it's horticultural overload as I calm down over a coffee on the way home.

  7. Your roses are soooooo beautiful. I am thinking about getting Easy Does It. Any fragrance?

    1. Yes, a sweet clean tea type of fragrance, not powerful but nice.

  8. I looooove these posts alot. I am in San Jose and I follow your blog (and Masha's) religously. Your recommendations are responsible for majority of my roses.

I have seen you post few pictures of Carding Mill. You never discussed it so I assumed you have it but were not happy with it. Was I wrong? Masha raves about hers, thats why I got two last season.

If you had to choose between Brass Band and Easy Does It which one do you choose? How do you compare them?

    1. Carding Mill, the photos are from a friend's garden, I don't have it myself. The friend was quite pleased with it, as I remember. Brass Band vs. Easy Does It, they seem very different to me so far. BB is quite a big, tall, strong plant blooming in regular flushes with pauses in between. It was quite slow to establish and at first was stingy (not any more). EDI much more dainty, with a few blooms all the time, even when first planted. Thank goodness I don't have to choose--I don't think I could. Certainly EDI if you don't have much space.

  10. I removed 4 mature roses this fall Hoov, some were in decline-Graham Thomas had significant quantities of blind shoots, Mary Rose had more suckers than not, I had 2 Icebergs and disease resistance for it is a myth, and my Julia Child after three years was clearly a lemon. DayBreaker went too. I was conflicted about that-it was vigorous and bloomed like mad but I hated the way the color broke up on the mature flowers . I've become less tolerant of rose foibles.

    1. I too gave up on 'Mary Rose'. A new one 'Princess Alexandra Of Kent' (so far) is 'Mary Rose' 2.0, much, much better! Day Breaker blooms so much it is hard not to like it, terrible Rust here, I should get rid of it, just haven't gotten to it. I agree, one learns what one likes in a rose, and over time we become ruthless in search of exactly what we want.

  11. Gorgeous roses from your 'perfumed' garden, Cressida and Comptesse de Provence are so lovely.
