All The Roses (Part 5) "H" - "K"

'Honey Perfume' All-around excellent, given good care.  Don't get stingy with water and fertilizer on this one--though that is true of nearly every rose, isn't it?

The plant:

'Iceberg' Mine turned into a climber.  Tremendous performance in Southern California--not great elsewhere.

'Irish Hope'.  Superb disease resistance, little fragrance, gets very, very tall.   It blooms in huge candelabras most of the time.
Rosa 'Irish Hope'

'Jadis' Long, elegant buds open to a so-so pink rose with a powerful sweet fragrance.  Prickly.  Decent disease resistance.  Best in cooler weather.
Jadis

'Jardins de Bagatelle'.  Fragrant, not overly vigorous.  Mildews, Rusts, Blackspots.

'Jubilee Celebration'.  A treasure for its small twiggy growth habit--Austins are usually monster plants here.  Fragrance, great Rust resistance, steady if not lavish rebloom.  No wonder I have seven plants of this cultivar forming a good short hedge.  The foliage is somewhat sparse, so multiple plants placed close together has made the best of it.

'Jude The Obscure'.  Among the very best of the best Austins for fragrance (sweet grapefruit) and disease resistance.  Super slow to begin regular repeat, but it finally gets there if you are patient enough.
Photobucket

'Julia Child'  All-around excellence--it's even fragrant.  The purple flower is Limonium perezii.
Photobucket

'Just Joey'  Huge billowy flowers, delicate fragrance, gorgeous color, better than average Rust resistance, best in cooler weather.

'Climbing Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria'.  Sweet strong fragrance, excellent disease resistance and vigor for an old (1897) variety.
Rosa 'Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria'

  1. All so beautiful, I love the flower and the healthy looking foliage on the plant of "Honey Perfume", "Jude the Obscure", "Just Joey" and "Jubilee Celebration" are all exceptional. "Iceberg" is a favourite of mine.

  2. I've been wondering how you'd get so many varieties into a garden, so I'm even more amazed since you have multiples (seven?) of some of these. Wow.

    1. Here people with much smaller gardens have more roses than I have!

    1. So 'Iceberg' does well in Southern California and...Norway. Who would have thought? Perhaps it was your gardening skill, not the climate?

  4. What a treat to see your rose post this morning! I really like when you are describing how the roses are performing for you. Since we are living relatively close I am taking some clues from that for my own garden. I am eying 'Jubilee Celebration' for a while now and I am glad to read that it stays a manageable plant size-wise. The photo of 'Just Joey' tugs at my heart and your 'Julia Child' is just amazing! Looking forward to the next installment!

    1. Hi Christina, I do recommend 'Jubilee Celebration' in this climate but think it looks best in a grouping because the foliage is spaced kind of wide--the plant looks a bit sparse by itself. But most excellent rebloom, and fragrance, and it doesn't get huge. Hard not to like it!

  5. I love Just Joey. Wondering if it will perform well in Zone 5b???

    1. The yellows and apricots are less cold-hardy in general...since it doesn't even frost here, can't really help you on that. Helpmefind says 7b for 'Just Joey'.

  7. Latecomer to the party....I never thought I was a "rose person" until a recent business trip to Wigwam Resort in Phoenix. O.M.G. the yellow non-stop proliferation of gorgeousness has made me an instant addict! After a lot of research, I have decided to get 3 Julia Childs to line my front entry/walkway. Yours are stunning and just wanted to say I love your blog!
