New Plant: Grocery Store Agave

There are now plants for sale outside our regular grocery store.  99.99% stuff I don't want, like petunias, but this Agave hooked me with his squiggly teeth.

What species are you, dear?

It called. I answered. I need to stop buying plants. I stay strictly away from garden centers, and the plants follow me to the grocery store. What's a gardener to do?

Update 8/2/2013:  Likely Agave horrida v. perotensis.

  1. We wish our grocery store sold plants like that! Yes, what's a gardener to do? :)

  2. Plants are irresistible to me, the lovely greens, the variegated leaves, gorgeous flowers ... they want me to take them home, so I do.

    1. They become beautiful on purpose. They know all my weaknesses.

  4. I bought an Aloe glauca at Lowes yesterday, also with blue leaves and orange teeth, but not quite as lethal as an Agave. It's so hard to resist a big healthy flowering plant for only $19.99. At least mine was labeled. I would have a hard time resisting that Agave too, especially since it was at the grocery store. It's easier to hide the cost of plants from my husband when I buy them there.

    1. Now you just gave me another reason to buy plants at the grocery store. Shame on you!

  5. Much as I keep promising myself to only buy plants that I know I have a place for (yeah, like that ever works), they are indeed irresistible. Even when I really do have a "vacancy," I often find myself buying more than one. For the hole, I pick out the specimen that's vigorous and well-shaped, but many times there's also the scrawny little sibling behind it. . .the one that's crying "take me home!" take me home!"

And thus doth the pot ghetto increase by one.

  6. It's the cosmos telling you that you and the agave need each other.

  7. You could try not buying groceries anymore. But I don't recommend it.

  9. That one's a beauty. I love its claws, and can see just how it got them into you!
