I Do Solemly Swear

Now begins the time of year when the roses--the flowers--are at their best.  The Thrips are gone.  The plants have grown for months and burst with the vigor of stored energy.  The days are warm, the nights cooled off.  The sun sets earlier so the flowers retain intense color longer.

It's also time to look over the garden, growing weary from months of growing, and to make solemn promises about next year.

I do solemnly swear to provide proper support for the Dahlias next year.

Proper support for every single Dahlia in the garden.

I do solemnly swear to get all the succulents out of pots and into the ground, where they will thrive and not die of thirst.  Yep, I underwater succulents.

I do solemnly swear to properly support tomatoes next year, too, rather than creating a sprawling, jungle-perfect habitat for rats.

I do solemnly swear to finish the east slope project before next summer.  The project I started back in...2011?  Oh, dear.

I do solemnly swear to get a photo of a hummingbird wherein the hummingbird is in focus.

Autumn...it turns me into an optimist, every time.  What garden mistakes do you plan never to make again?

  1. I am pleased it is not only me that under waters the succulents. I am going to try to stop taking offsets to prop and then forgetting about them so they either grow where I left them or I kill them.

    1. Yes but you have an excuse: where you are, it rains.

I don't even get around to the offsets most of the time.

  2. Oh My Gosh, all the ones you mention are my own. I don't water my succulents hardly at all during the summer. I didn't realize till recently that they will grow better on more water. That's such a pretty apricot-colored Dahlia.

    1. Guess I'm not the only one then. That means it's okay to continue then. ;^)

Yes, a lovely Dahlia with its pretty face in the mulch. Shame on me!

  3. Every Fall I swear that next year I won't buy a bunch of non-hardy plants which end up coming into the house when the weather turns cold, and look progressively worse until I throw them out. Every Fall I swear that next year I will actually make my garden look designed instead of a random collection of plants that I couldn't resist that summer. I have yet to succeed!

    1. I'm double guilty on the "random collection" thing. The non-hardy thing though I escape because of climate!

  4. I hear you on hummingbirds - glad for the one I captured last fall almost in focus! Time to set up video for the things. Fall is amazing, isn't it, and into full swing here except some days.

  5. Lovely photos dear Hoover, I have a lot of garden mistakes that I must rectify, specifically buying plants and leaving them in their pots.

    1. Plants left in the pots I bought them in. Yay! I am not alone! :^)

  6. haha - Laughed at the hummingbird resolution. I can never get one in focused, either. And I thought I was the only one that could kill a container cactus from lack of water! I have loads of garden resolutions every year, but they are like the New Year's kind - usually not completed!

    1. I gave up on the New Year's kind. Still have hope for the garden kind.

  7. My list would be too long to post here. Looking at your roses reminds me that I really need to take action to improve conditions for my roses - more compost, mulch and water to start. I also need to keep after all my new plants, especially when the temps climb, to minimize my losses.

    1. Blog post idea, then! New plants here all go in the shade, (which killed off my first pair of 'Ebony' Leucadendrons, darnit).

  8. I made a terrible mistake this summer by not watering my garden extra. We are not used to have dry summers like we had this year. But when the rain came my rose did come a life in october.
    Have a great weekend Hoover.
