Russelia equisetiformis

A draping, cascading plant with flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies.  Not in the least hardy, but reportedly potted specimens can be brought indoors for the winter, if you have a place for it by a sunny window.  From southern Mexico into Guatemala, which implies a need for conditions supplying warmth and water.

  1. I almost bought a tiny one of these at Flora Grubb during the Fling (cuz I need another not hardy plant to over winter?). I managed to pass.

    1. I'll grow it for you. You grow Podophyllums for me. Seems fair...

  2. My Russelia 'Flamingo Park' made it through winter in my zone 10b garden last year but then we haven't seen any temperatures lower than 35 degrees since we moved here. I've got an ivory form in a pot so my fingers are crossed that they hang in there.

  3. I bought Russelia equisetiformis (Coral Fountain or Firecracker Plant) at a plant sale in the fall a couple of years ago. I planted it in a pot and placed it in what I thought was a protected area outside, but it died, never to return. I really liked the looks of the plant, but don't think I want to try it again. You have posted a very nice closeup of the flower!

    1. I am not quite 100% sure I like it. Will it be ratty here, or unruly? I'll find out. Sorry you lost yours.
