Agave 'Blue Glow' Seeds, Germinated
I read Agave seeds floated in a dish of water will germinate. Yes, it worked! These may be 'Blue Glow' x Manfreda maculata, or plain 'Blue Glow' seeds. Now, to plant and nurture...the hard part.
I always get excited about seeds germinating. Even more so when it's something "unique" like Agave seeds! (Not that I'll be able to do that any time in the next several years myself!)
ReplyDeleteI'm not a seed person, but this was fun. (Probably because it was easy.)
DeleteThat is very exciting well done. Look forward to all the future updates. If you have any spares, I would love to try some in the UK.
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy to send you some, Spiky, if it is legal to send Agave/Manfreda or Agave seeds to the UK. Email me your address.
DeleteCool! I like the photo: It looks like a petri dish experiment ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt's an ice cream dish experiment. I'll just have to eat straight out of the carton...
DeleteYippee, Seeds! I hope you get some unusual plants from these.
ReplyDeleteI hope so, too.
DeleteOMG!! so cool! totes jelly here lol
ReplyDeleteHi Dustin!
DeleteHow cool! I will have to try this method, as I've only used seed raising mix. Do you think you'll have to place them a certain way when you plant them, or will you just throw them in a hole and cover over, and they'll work out their growing direction on their own?
ReplyDeleteI'll place them carefully, with radicle (root) facing downwards.
DeleteImpressive! It'll be interesting to see how they do in a pot. I wonder how fast they grow?
ReplyDeleteI have no clue. Apparently they like some warmth (low 70's).
DeleteAgave seeds germinated. That's exciting, I am always sowing and growing, but Agaves are slow growing in our country so I don't try. In winter we have to put these plants in heated greenhouses, which means lots of work to keep them going.
ReplyDeleteHeating greenhouses gets expensive. I think it is better to grow what is easier, but I am lazy!
Deletewhere you bought the seed?
ReplyDeleteI can not find it.
Thanks
Hello Maccu,
DeleteOne of the 'Blue Glow' plants in my garden bloomed, and I collected seeds from it.
This is potentially very cool, how did the seedlings fare over the past couple of years? Were they distinctively different?
ReplyDeleteI have been meaning to do an update on the seedlings. They are all distinctly different from each other in shape and coloring, and though similar to the parent, they are not the same. They are also still very, very small without a lot of vigor--but that could be how I am growing them. I will have another 'Blue Glow' bloom in the next year or two, so I'll probably try again. and will post an update on the seedlings soon.
