What all that work is for
Mulching is the dentist's drill of gardening--you know you must, but it hurts.
This year, I got help from Beloved and Mr. Mow-Blow.
The first day (several to go) was vastly easier--Beloved kindly brought buckets of mulch so I could focus on enrobing the slopes with a fluffy brown blanket, and Mr. Mow-Blow and his guys divided the big delivery into smaller piles placed around the garden (and off the street) to make it easy for me to get everything mulched. Usually I do it all alone, without help. It's an ordeal. Think worse than dentist's drill. Think root canal. Asking for help--so glad I did.
Not as overwhelmed as usual
What a relief it was to get started on the last, worst, dreaded, difficult task of the winter, and find it not so bad this time. Mulch madness.

Last, worst, dreaded, but oh, so important! I had help with some mulch moving this year, and I don't know if I'll be able to go back to the solo act! (That stuff looks wonderful -- do you know what type of wood it is?)
ReplyDeleteIt's tough when it is so warm. If it was low 60s it would be so much easier. It was 91F here today.
DeleteThat is composted tree shreddings, size small. It's usually Eucalyptus, but this year it smelled more conifer. So many Pines and Sequoias have been dying around here, that could be what it is.
I feel for you! Last Monday I received a delivery of 10 cubic yards of soil. Piles and piles of it. I took almost a week to move it to where it needed to go. Glad you had help!
ReplyDeleteOy, soil is a lot heavier than mulch. You must still be tired! That's 8 yards of mulch in the pile--it is starting to look like 10 would have been better.
DeleteThis is the lesson I've learned: For soil, order LESS than you think you need. For mulch, order MORE :-).
DeleteI think you are right!
DeleteMy mulching tasks are still a good couple of months away, no help to be found around here though, thank good I've got a small garden.
ReplyDeleteAll alone? Surely Miss Lila "supervises"?
DeleteI'm feeling like a laggard...8 yards?! I need to order for my community center this year. We use a LOT! Yours looks like lovely stuff and even more important for your climate. Glad you had help to spread - Beloved is a gem!
ReplyDeleteEight is not enough! Yes, Beloved IS a keeper!
Delete;Mulching is very important but.......I like the comparison with the dentist. I can understand you are very glad with your helping men.
ReplyDeleteI have a very nice dentist, but it's still never fun. I was grateful for the help in making the garden more beautiful. That was a very nice thing.
DeleteNo matter how much mulch we bring in, it is never enough. That's OK: enough would probably do us in. Is there anything more beautiful that a big weeded, mulched stretch of garden? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing more beautiful than a big weeded mulched stretch of garden is when it is your very own!
