The 'Joe Hoak' Agave offsets in March of 2013:
They looked pretty bad a year ago. Two went out front last week, replacing the Euphorbia, Dyckia, and Senecio.
Before:
Now:
The index of gorgeousness skyrocketed on these guys. Look back up at the first picture. This is what the one on the far right has become. Same plant!
The transformation makes me laugh with pure delight.
Original papa 'Joe' looks poorly. Being engulfed by two Euphorbias and a Senecio hurt. He's still apparently preparing to bloom, but he's weakened. Entirely my fault he got crowded.
Shame on me!
I hope the extra space and some extra water will strengthen him. Seeing two of his newer selves looking so good might help.

I can't get over how much growth those Agaves have put on in a year. They look splendid!
ReplyDeleteThat warm dry winter we suffered through at least did 'Joe' some good.
DeleteOh Joe! Your babies are beauties, thanks again for sharing!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
DeleteI LOOOOOOVE 'Joe Hoak'. Mine got nipped a bit in the winter but has been busy putting out new leaves, and they're all perfect. I'm waiting for the pups to grow a bit before I remove them and plant them elsewhere. You can't ever have enough of this agave!
ReplyDeleteNo, never enough of beautiful Joe. I am hoping my offsets have offsets.
DeleteThat certainly is a beautiful agave! They seem hard to find in the nurseries - and when you do, the price is enough to make one choke - so accolades for growing your own.
ReplyDeleteI made sure I harvested the offsets to offset the price of the original. :^)
DeleteJust ran out and planted my Joe in the ground after seeing the transformation on yours. I've always assumed he was a little too rarified for anything but a container, but now I see I was mistaken!
ReplyDeleteHe's more than just a pretty boy.
DeleteSuch a handsome fellow! it's impressive that you grew these!
ReplyDeleteHow ever did I do so good?
