Mulch Time

The annual mulching marathon.  Only six cubic yards this year.
The first thing to do is get it off the street.  A pile to the back...

Three piles in the front...

Then the fun really begins.

A fresh, even mulch makes a plant stand out clearly.

Lots of distractions to enjoy while lugging all that mulch around.

With this scenery, seems more like fun than work.

  1. You must be exhausted come March! I need to follow your lead on mulching - I haven't done nearly as much as I should.

    1. The heck with March--I'm exhausted right now.

Mulch really seems to hold moisture in--it is worth all the work. Also strengthens the arms & shoulders!

  2. It is pretty difficult to feel bad for you hauling mulch around when you share images like these! That last one is especially breathtaking.

    1. I got to look at that over and over in my back-and-forth trips with buckets. So yes, no sympathy required. :)

  3. Indeed this does not look like work (haha), you must have had a wonderful time and job, spreading the mulch in your beautiful garden together with your big hairy friend helping you.

    1. My big hairy friend watched me go back and forth. He stared and me and sighed every time I walked past without stopping to pet him or to throw his ball. Natasha slept through it all. What help!

  4. You´ve got such a beautiful garden!!

  5. It would be easy for me to get distracted, as mulching is my least favorite garden chore, especially when you have to be careful and tuck it all around small plants. At work I don't mind the shoveling and wheelbarrow work, but I leave the detail work to others. BTW I love all the forms and textures in that last shot.

    1. I always dread mulch time, but it always turns out to be not as bad as expected.

Shoveling is hard for me, but good exercise. I just read that the best exercise is short bursts of intensity mixed in with periods of low intensity--and doesn't that exactly describe gardening?

  6. Hard work for sure, but better than shoveling snow!

    1. I'll have to take your word for that, but mulching must be warmer than shoveling snow, if nothing else.

  7. The distractions are the best part of gardening. I found the first frog of the season while weeding yesterday. Mulching comes next.

    1. There has been enough rain this year for a few toads and frogs. The previous two years it was so dry, none at all. Enjoy your mulching. Nothing better than having everything trimmed back, weeded, and mulched--all that's left to happen is Spring. :)

  8. Okay, you've probably mentioned it in the past, but from whom do you buy mulch and did they deliver it? Amazing how in the last photo the green central stripe on the yucca is an exact match for the green of the agave -- beautiful garden composition, beautiful photo.

    1. Aguinaga.

Of course I planned that exact match of the yucca and agave. ;^)
