Buzzards, Cathartes auras, relaxing. Are they mother and child? Mates? Friends? Rivals for road-kill? I don't know. Around here most people call them Turkey Vultures, but the word "buzzard" is more fun.
The combination of blue, blue sky, black feathers, natural wood, red head, white beak, and grey metal appealed to me.

I like your picture and I like to say buzzard, too! I used to walk daily along a fairly deserted stretch of beach and occasionally saw a few of these guys, particularly later in the day when the …ahem..aromas from various carcasses wafts upward to guide them to a meal. They cracked me up because they looked so out of place amongst the sleek gulls, terns and other sea birds - a like a group of older men in scruffy suits, socks and shoes trying to hang out at the beach with the cool surfer kids!
ReplyDeleteOld guys can be cool, too. The Dude abides. :^)
DeleteIt is a great word. Features prominently in my favorite Dan Hicks & Hot Licks piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QilDVEi7PMk
ReplyDeleteThat is a fun song! Thanks for the link, enjoyed it.
DeleteThe Buzzards are our friends, too.
They look so stately and attractive - at least from the back.
ReplyDeleteThey are stately, and fly like no other bird. Just not such a pretty face.
DeleteVery nice shot! Buzzard - It's as much fun to type as it is to say!
ReplyDeleteWould be a great name for a black hound dog.
DeleteBeautiful when soaring overhead...up close, not so much.
ReplyDeleteSometimes distance gives perspective?
DeleteAHA! New name for these not so handsome birds! Seems like there are more and more of these buzzards in our area. Hopefully their numbers do not match those of the loverly crows don't even get me started on those little b@%$#^ds hanging in the eucalyptus trees!
ReplyDeleteDon't get me started on those %^$#*#@ Eucalyptus! ;^) I'm not found of crows, either, but they have their place in the world, and they are an interesting example of a matriarchal species.
