Blooms January 2016

A long day in the garden pruning roses--just a few quick shots for Bloom Day.
'Iceberg', you're next.
Aloe thraskii still looking fabulous.  This year loaded with bees rather than the usual warblers or orioles picking off the flowers.
 Aloe capitata, flowers still developing
Aloe marlothii, flower stem just appearing
The 3.3" of rain we got nearly two weeks ago (sigh) gave Grevillea 'Coastal Gem' a big boost.
More flowers from Echeveria 'Arlie Wright'.  Amazing color on the stems
The last 'Altissimo' bloom of the season.  I'm not overly fond of the plant, with it's coarse growth habit and somewhat sparse foliage, but those flowers dazzle me, even ragged and dusty.
A pruning bouquet of 'Golden Buddah', 'Altissimo', a few Gaillardias, and a few ragged stems of Abelia 'Kaleidoscope', with bare and cut back 'Altissimo' in the background.
First flower ever from Aloe cryptoflora, with a happy bee coming in for a landing.
Happy hurried Bloom Day to all!

  1. El Niño seems to have gotten lost or way laid since our one storm, 3.3" for you and 4.3" for me), hasn't he? But he still managed to clean the leaves and perk up a few plants. I like the blazing color of 'Altissimo', too, especially at this time of year.

    1. I hope he finds his way back, pronto. Still, that 3.3 was much appreciated, and there are still tubs and barrels of the good stuff to distribute through the garden.

  2. You got more than double the rain we did. I love your bouquet, especially 'Golden Buddha'. I hope you're taking the rose pruning slowly too.

    1. My area got the most rain in OC, I think. We were lucky.

Took all day to do 5 small roses and 'Altissimo'. Many more to go. 'Golden Buddha' is a nice rose, stays very small, some fragrance. I like that one a lot.

  3. Your Grevillea 'Coastal Gem' is a lot further along with blooming than mine... Here's to hoping the rains come back!

    1. Hoping, hoping, hoping!

The CG is 4 years old now...bloom has gotten better and better. It's been a very easy plant, exceeding expectations.

    2. If!! I got your message about the photographs. Thank you for allowing me to use her kindness . I think it take a couple of days to write the article. The moment you put it on the blog I will send you a link so you can see it.
They are very explicit and very well done pictures .
I would like to know your opinion on this topic . In what can be done to cover the negative point of graft ? In what can harm the rose ?
