Above: the heat didn't bother Aloe marlothii
It cooled off enough today to move a couple of roses. I hope to screen out the pipe mess there in the corner.
While I worked, it started to sprinkle.
I dare you to actually rain, I said to the sky. Your sprinkle don't scare me. The sky dared not.
Ba humbug, El Wimpo.
The biggest El Nino in history, and this is the best you can do?
I kept working. Intending to throw out a tuteur that fell apart in high winds last week...
Can't throw it away yet. See?
High hot winds expected to return in a few days. Perhaps the broken tuteur and its attached little item should be tucked next to the wall for extra shelter, and the newly transplanted roses shaded from the sun. It will be 90F again. Bah humbug, El Wimpo.

Did you end up with any rain? We're actually getting some in the desert!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy for you! Any rain is a benefit. We got a little over .15", I think. It's something, it's something. I'm grateful!
DeleteWe just reached 0.4 inches of rain and it's still coming down steadily - more than the forecasters expected for a change. It started as spit here too but the drizzle turned to real rain around 5pm. If it hasn't reached you yet, I hope it does soon!
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic, Kris. I hope your barrels runneth over. We got maybe .15". What a relief for the plants, after those brutal near 90F three days.
DeleteThe aloe is a stunner! I hope you get rain soon. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Phillip. I'm amazed by the Aloe, it's a thrill having it in the garden. We did get a little rain...
DeleteI know we're meant to be equal parts weepy and indignant about the lack of rain thus far down our way, but it is a global weather variation, of which winter rain in southern California is only a small part, and has already done massive damage to much of the world (and rid us, temporarily anyway, of The Blob), so I suppose we ought to be thankful for small favors. Also, all this heat? That's El Niño. We are, in fact, swimming in it.
ReplyDeleteMore to the point, though: that aloe is a dream. Your succulents are always demonstration / botanical garden-worthy, in the best possible sense.
I am awe-struck by the marlothii this year. It sounds like no one is tired of looking at it yet--I'm glad for that, because I'm not.
DeleteNeither weepy nor indignant myself, I'm honestly depressed. My green friends are thirsty, thirsty. But I thought El Nino had become The Blob...one monster morphed into another...thanks for the link!
Nice find! Did the other part of the tuteur blow away? Seems like it could be easily repaired... What does hot wind feel like again? It's been a while, although 70's expected here Saturday!
ReplyDeleteThe wood itself is crumbling. Our dry air and constant UV rays do a number on wood here--it doesn't last long even regularly painted. I can crumble it in my hand. I would like to build another--that is--was--a good looking little structure.
DeleteHot wind? Imagine opening a 500 degree oven and holding your face to the blast. Enjoy a warm Saturday--great gardening weather, right? :)
We had quite a downpour last night and then again just now. Maybe 0.4" in total. I'm not complaining.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on El Niño being rather wimpy overall. But the best may still be to come...
0.4" is great! Happy for you!
DeleteDecember was a dud. January we got off to a great start--then nothing. February arrived--this is it! It's going to be February. Except it wasn't. Now we hope March will come through...
Those big spots of rain get our hopes up for a heavier deluge but they just evaporate in the heat. :) I hope you get some good rain soon
ReplyDeleteCan your teuter be repaired, it is so lovely?
xoxoxo ♡
I am thinking I could copy the tuteur and build a new one...
DeleteIf you can build another that would be good as they are so expensive. We had some promising spots of rain earlier, now the sun is out and its so hot.
Deletexoxoxo ♡
I'm sorry El Wimpo disappointed you, and hope you get some more moisture soon. Even if not, looking at that wonderful Aloe ought to brighten your spirits some. I know it did mine!
ReplyDeleteI have high standards for rainfall--I want lots. ;^) Yes, the Aloe is a thrill! Never would have expected that from the 6" plant I bought about 8 years ago.
DeleteIt would be hard to let that dreamy tuteur go...the color is perfect. I don't think you could ever overdo that Aloe and since it's happy, draught or no...maybe a whole forest of them?
ReplyDeleteI took some 'Rozanne' geranium flowers to the paint store and had them copy the color, no joke. I love that color.
DeleteThere are several other tree Aloes on the slope--it will be a little forest (given the chance) in time.
The Aloe striata mass planting is lovely!
ReplyDeleteI thought so, too! :)
