There's The Snake!

I've seen this beastie a couple of times this year without being able to get a photo.  Beloved happened to be dropping some recycling into the bin this morning and got a phone-tograph of California Striped Racer (Colubis lateralis lateralis) lurking in the Ligustrum hedge.  This species unfortunately loves to eat lizards.  Sigh.  It's his planet too, though.

  1. Wikipedia says they'll also eat birds and small mammals, which is hard to believe - I guess they can open their jaws REALLY wide. I've only seen a snake once here and have no clue what it was. I'm afraid I responded like a stereotypical girl and high-tailed it out of the way.

    1. Eden must have it's serpent, I guess.

Yeah, you better believe I screamed like a girl the two times I saw Colubis l. l. Me no like!

  2. I'm a lizard fan too. There's a lot of juveniles darting around the garden right now. I was surprised to discover that the lizards pick off bees from my hive. For some reason I thought bees wouldn't taste good. Snake eats lizard eats bee. My bees would be happy if your snake moved into my garden!

    1. Here they are crazy for earwigs, flies, and even the destructive larvae of sawflies that chew holes in rose foliage. Have never seen one nab a bee.

Your blog is cool. I was looking at it.

    1. Did not realize what expert climbers snakes are. The beastie was going all through shrubs with ease and grace. Guess that is how it got up the legendary apple tree to talk to Eve.

  4. I know that snakes have a place in nature but I don't like them at all. I have had a few scarey encounters with them, a poisonous Red Bellied Black snake that I almost trod on while it was sunning itself on my back doorstep, thankfully I frightened it and it slivered away. They are great climbers, being able to get amongst the tree branches, the Diamond Pythons eating possums and birds which is very sad and I don't like any snake who eats lizards. My son and I caught a Diamond Python which was in my tree and re-located it to the bushland at the end of my road. Sadly for the small mammals, birds and lizards, these snakes are protected.
    xoxoxo. ❤️

    1. Didn't know anything about snakes in Australia. Your experiences are interesting. Pythons....screech! I guess the little guy in my privet hedge isn't so bad.

  5. I think it's the startle factor of the slither that gets the "Eek!" I've seen lots of snakes this summer and they are more than welcome. Beloved must be quick on the draw to get such an excellent shot.
