The Hummingbird who patrols the front slope Aloes, surveys his world from the top of a dormant Lagerstroemia 'Dynamite'.
Lagerstroemias never cease to amaze me. They appear utterly dried out and dead at this time of year--but they are perfectly alive, serenely awaiting spring. Most northern hemisphere gardeners are probably waiting for spring with an emotion other than serenity, the exception being us here in Southern California. Here, winter equals rain. After five blistering, tree-killing drought years, we want as much rain as we can handle. Carry on here, Winter, as long as you can.

We have been disappointed this past week because the hummingbird that took over our back garden as his domain seems to have vanished. 'Dynamite' is one of my favorites. I planted it in Alabama at my partner's salon. It was outstanding.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that--the hummer may be attracted to another food source right now. They go where the eating is good. I can identify with that!
DeleteI love 'Dynamite'! I am hoping they have an extra good growing season this year because of all the rain.
Nice shot. You have such patience to catch the hummingbirds as you do.
ReplyDeleteThey're always around! Right now they are crazy for the Grevillea 'Superb'. There's always a bird of some kind on it, it seems.
DeleteI'm sure I'm going to sound like an idiot, but I'm interested to discover that not everything that grows in southern California is evergreen all winter. Deciduous plants/trees go dormant, just like everywhere else.
ReplyDeleteWe generally don't grow a lot of deciduous plants in So Cal, actually. Some trees, but not much else. There are so many plants we can grow that are evergreen, and plants that need a winter chill are basically annuals here.
DeleteWhat a surprising California winter shot! Somehow I just didn't think grey skies were possible down there. While I'm in no hurry to have spring come to our PNW latitudes just yet, I DO hope you get to keep the replenishing cool weather for quite a bit longer in California. Heaven knows you need it!
ReplyDeleteIt did look very wintery to me. A novelty to enjoy!
DeleteAmen to the winter wish!
ReplyDeleteRain predicted for Friday late afternoon! Wheee!
DeletePerfect silhouette...sometimes monochromatic is just what we need.
