So the presence of lizards is doubly good! I have seen a gopher snake and a striped racer in the garden a couple of times, (and ran into the house) but never a rattler, thank goodness. This might have been a particularly good year to see them where you were; from the Audubon site: "Occasionally stages large invasions into lowlands, perhaps when food crops fail in the mountains."
