That Pristine First Moment

You know the moments, those days even more fleeting than Spring itself, the days or even just hours when all the rose foliage is newly open, plumply infantile, and still as soft as butterhead lettuce, but there is not a touch of mildew...


...when no buds have yet been chewed, no petals have fallen...


...before the gold of a single stamen toasts brown...


...before a stem bends...


...when the very first rose opens with intense color, a color you have quite forgotten until again reminded...


...before it is even warm enough to smell the Lavenders...


...before the Bumblebees wake up.


Spring is not one monolithic period of perfection.  There are successive moments in Spring, the middle of it, which is a flurry of activity, and the end of it, when the coming heat of summer looms on the event horizon.  

That pristine first moment is a season unto itself.
