Two Blue And Green Ice

Iris 'Heavenly Vision' and Clematis 'Rhapsody'.

Iris usually seen face-on, like this...

And a bulb ("Dutch") Iris...
"Dutch" Iris

Call them Two Blue instead of True Blue.  The camera brings out the blueness, which in reality is far more purple in the case of the Clematis and "Dutch" Iris.  In contrast, Iris 'Heavenly Vision' really is that lovely pale slice of sky.

Liar liar stems on fire!

Now that the glamor-girls of the garden, Clematis, are flaunting their glories, we shall forget all about Gasteraloes.  Or shall we?

Maybe not quite.

  1. Stunning photos, especially of the iris 'Heavenly Vision' and the Dutch iris! I love irises, but somehow my irises don't do that well in my garden. They decline for no apparent reason after a year of being in the ground. Do you have any idea what I could do to make them thrive? How are you treating yours? Thanks for any answer in advance!

  2. Hmm...are we talking I. germanica (bearded) hybrids? Are they planted at the right depth? (Not too deep--top of rhyzome exposed) Over watered or under watered? Are they the from the big-box store (poor quality, dried up)? Any borers in the rhyzome? In enough sun? (They dislike shade.)

What does a declined plant look like when you dig it up? Rotted? Roots thin and dry, or non-existent?

Mine get loose soil, are planted high, in full sun, get water two or three times a month, have perfect drainage, get dug up and replanted every three years or so.

  3. Love the white irises! I have lots of purple irises blooming right now but I want to add yellow and white irises too!

  4. Hoover Boo, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question about the irises in such detail. Yes, I was talking bearded irises. You gave me a lot of hints what I can look for to identify the problem that causes them to decline. I will follow your advice and dig an iris up that is not doing well and have a closer look at the rhizome and the roots. Many thanks again!
