Erythrina x bidwillii. Pull Up A Chair And Stare

Photobucket

I visited a neighbor's wonderful dry garden to see her spectacular Erythrina x bidwillii.  "Erythrina" is based on the Ancient Greek word for "red".   The plant lives up to its name.

Unlike others in the Erythrina genus, it's more of a large shrub than a large tree.  San Marcos says its a hybrid of E. crista-galli x E. herbacea, and is hardy to about 20 degrees.  My neighbor says it is quite easy from cuttings. Oh so tempting!

What sent it over the top was its neighbor, a tall yellow Anigozanthos, yes, My-Favorite-Plant-I-Don't-Own again.  Taking photographs of it everywhere I see it is nearly as fun as having it in my own garden.  Maybe more fun!  This might be 'Harmony';  the flower stems were red.  It looked beyond spectacular with the Erythrina.  Like many other Australian plants, phosphorus should be avoided for this plant.  Our local water company happens to spike the water supply with phosphorus to keep its pipes clean.  Perhaps My-Favorite-Plant-I-Don't-Own is fated to be always so named.

Nearby, a newly opening Cactus flower's colors coordinated nicely.

Sometimes, you want to pull up a chair and Just Stare.

  2. My neighbor across the street has a big patch of the anigozanthos (mostly yellow) and they're definitely one of the more spectacular sights in the neighborhood. Your neighbor's pairing of it with the Erythrina is inspired.
