...Dirt is even heavier. I'm screening rocks out of a pile of soil to fill the raised beds in the veggie garden. I sure know how to have a good time, eh? Why laze by a crystal blue pool, adult beverage in hand, when you can get really sore lugging buckets of dirt up a steep garden stairway. (Not that we have a pool--just giving an example of what normal people might consider fun.)
There are not many rocks, but I want a very smooth textured soil for planting vegetable seeds.
I always put a piece of wire fencing over the veggie beds so the local cat population doesn't use them as litter boxes. (Go coyotes!) I will add compost and let them sit for a month or two. Longer would have been better, but I was slow about getting the Fall Project completed.
Three beds done, three to go. I made time to admire the Cercis occidentalis trees. Many sources say "best bloom in areas of winter chill" in regards to Cercis. There's little chill here, but they manage to bloom well anyway:
Their flowering beauty is very brief: two weeks at most.
It is a nice two weeks, but it didn't make the buckets of soil feel any lighter. Owwww!!!!
At least you don't have to haul rocks. That's the ultimate in wear-me-down garden work I think.
ReplyDeleteIt feels good to have lots of sore muscles at the end of a day in the garden sometimes, doesn't it?
I do sleep a lot better at night, and no gym required.
ReplyDeleteWe know the feeling ;) But it'll be worth it in the end :)
ReplyDeleteMark and Gaz, after seeing the size of your new pond on your blog, I know you know the feeling. And your soil is probably much heavier than mine!
