I still can't figure out which Clematis this is. So deeply darkly purple, it is near black.
A viticella hybrid no doubt, the flowers are about 3" in diameter. Note the blackness of the sepal tips, which is the true-to-life color.
The color agrees well with nearby Cerinthe, now peaking in a weeping curtain of blue and purple. Once Summer heat arrives, the Cerinthe will dry up and scatter their hard black seeds for next year.
Clematis 'Jackmanii' is nearby as well. This group looks like it is standing in line, or queuing up, for something. The premier of "The Avengers"?
A very different sort of purple, Hemerocallis 'Bella Sera'. Reminder to self: not all purples are the same.
Orange are not the same, either. The flowers of Metrosideros collina 'Springfire' are a soft, gentle orange, while still being orange, not peach, not tangerine, not apricot. This shrub/small tree is growing well. I'll plant more of them, if this one proves happy with the heat of our summer.
The fat round buds of Austin rose 'The Endeavour' are orange, though the flower opens to a coral pink and fades to medium pink.
See what I mean by fat and round?
And one of the last Aloes before summer, which might be A. camperi, or just a motley hybrid. It blooms and then is engulfed for the summer by Tagetes lemonii. Sneaky Bougainvillea.
Lastly, the orange flowers of Cotyledon 'Happy Dancing Girl'. This plant is doing splendidly on winter rain alone. I planted it from a 4" pot and its now over 2' across and looking as perfect as it did at 4". The Cotyledon's leaf tips are exactly the color of the unknown blackish Clematis, so we come full circle in color. Yes, the Bougainvillea magenta snuck in, ruining my attempt at color discipline yet again.
