Stump Speech -- a political campaign speech, especially one made on a campaign tour. Origin: 1810–20, Americanism.

Stump Speech -- Along with shovel, pick, pruning saw, and loppers, the torrent of invectives and obscenities required to remove an unwanted tree.  Origin:  garden.

  3. I know. Just yesterday I was feebly trying to extract an old ceanothus stump. Not having (nor being capable of safely wielding) a pick, I finally gave up and planted slightly to the rear of it. Sigh.
