Chrysalides now hang all over the Agave near what is left of the Asclepias. The chrysalis resembles a tiny opalescent lantern in which the caterpillar's stripes can be faintly discerned. Amazing nature!
Well how splendid Hoov..I've planted Asclepias more than once with no result ( other than modest invasiveness) ..I guess the Norcal Monarchs prefer to visit Pacific Grove. Looking forward to the next update.

So cool. I hope you manage to capture at least one of them emerging.

ReplyDeleteI was completely surprised. I never saw so many Monarchs in the garden before.
DeleteReally amazing, nature is full of surprises. And......I am looking forward to the butterfly coming out.
ReplyDeleteSo am I! I have to figure out how many days they'll be in there, and then start watching closely when "opening day" arrives.
DeleteBeautiful! And (for me) a relief...had they done serious munching damage to the agave I wouldn't have been able to stand it.
ReplyDeleteThey only eat milkweed--they would not even sample an Agave, so the Agaves are in no danger, (except from Evil Mealies).
