So, How's The Itoh Peony Doing?

How is the Itoh Peony 'Misaka' doing after a very warm dry winter?  Like the Japanese Maples and the Hellebores, its been slower than usual.  Still...

Across the path, the Cymbidiums stare, all agog.

  1. Gorgeous color! Nice echoing. Clever caption! The orchids really do look like they are staring open-mouthed.

    1. The color coordination was entirely accidental, but I'm willing to take credit.

  2. What a gorgeous color! Peachy bronze. Do you know its name? I have one new itoh (Bartzella) - fingers crossed that it will bloom this year.

    1. That one is sold as 'Misaka' though the original name was 'Smith Opus One'. It was hybridized by Don Smilth. I have seen Bartzella: its a beauty!

  3. A real Piece of Eden, an extra-ordinary beautiful coloured Peony and than the Cymbidiums......in your garden. In our surroundings there are huge glasshouses where they grow Cymbidiums for export, but we cannot have them in the garden.

    1. It is interesting that Cymbidiums, which are from higher elevations in Southeast Asia, absolutely love coastal Southern California. Our cooler winter nights are perfect for stimulating them to bloom.

Those huge glasshouses filled with Cymbidiums--that must be something to see!

  4. The orchids are justifiably impressed! I'm impressed that your Itoh is already blooming. Mine ('Keiko') is tardy, at least relative to yours and those in the local nurseries, but the foliage continues to flesh out and it still looks healthy so my fingers are crossed.

    1. It will be fine. If mine can bloom after a hot dry winter, it must be fairly satisfied with So Cal living.

  5. I like that color and it does go well with the cymbidiums. I have 'Keiko'. (I blogged about it a few days ago.) My first time ever to grow a peony, and I am so pleased with it. I counted 12 buds and 2 are now blooming. I just hope our long hot summers will not be too rough on it.
