Wednesday Vignettes From The San Diego Botanic Garden

Succulent Mariachi at the San Diego Botanic Garden.  Undulating Crassula 'Blue Wave' for his fluffy curls,  starry Sedum nussbaumerianum for his frilly shirt, but two metal prongs to hold your copper mustache in place seems...painful.

Orange and green Aloe vanbaleni with orange and green Euphorbia turicallii.

Orange-crowned Warbler, Oreothlypis celata (?) and Aloe marlothii.  How dainty the bird, how hefty the Aloe.

Eye update:  at re-check, the retina doctor said the laser repair appeared successful and complete, and that vision should be good again soon.  Much gratitude to you all for kindness and encouragement!

Moral of the story is that should your vision suddenly experience a bright white flash followed by a view of blurry cobwebs, or complete darkness, or something along those lines, get to an opthalmologist ASAP.  The sooner you get it examined and repaired, the easier and better and quicker and less painful the fix.

  1. The good news about your eye makes me very happy for you. The bird is a lesser goldfinch. How do I know? The general jizz plus the white on the wings (oc warbler doesn't have any), the shape of the bill and the fuzziness or fluffyness of the plumage. I like this photo a lot because of the contrast, dainty vs warlike, as you mentioned, also the direction of the light from the side, sun vs shadow. I've got lots of goldfinches and no marlothii. I threw it out. I got punctured too many times. Cheers to the good news.

    1. thank you jane! well I have a great excuse on the id, can't see out of one eye! ha ha! marlothii does have sharp teeth as aloes go, but mine is where no one including me can easily reach it, so no worries.

  4. That poor fellow in image #1 has a pained expression due probably to the metals prongs. ;-) Beautiful orange colours in the second image and the little warbler looks so sweet.
Dear Hoover, I'm so pleased and relieved for you that you have had some good news regarding your eye and I hope it keeps improving and your vision will be back to normal very soon. Sorry you had to suffer this painful experience, eyes and good sight are so precious.
    Take care dear friend.

  10. Oh goodness - I have totally missed your eye debacle! (I have been a very negligent blog reader lately...) Sorry to hear you had to experience that, but I'm very happy that you are on the mend. Stuff like that can be immensely scary.
