Wednesday Vignette October 19, 2016

Niguel Botanic Preserve.  Careful erosion-prevention preparations done last year for an expected El Nino that turned out to be El Noshow.  Perhaps it will be of use this winter.  We can hope, even if hope, like water, is running low.

To add a little beauty to the vignette, nearby dried flowers of Salvia clevelandii are as ornamental dry as fresh.

As a matter of fact, we received a bit of magic sky water on Monday, perhaps 0.15" (4 mm).  So while not quite a vignette, I get a pass for magic sky water, right?

  1. Your Cleveland sage photos are 10x better than the one on the cover of Pacific Horticulture.

    1. You are very kind, Jane. Thank you.

I love the Salvia clevelandii flowers when they are all dried black like that. They remind me of something cool, though I know not what.

  2. That's a beautiful raindrops shot! I didn't get out early enough to capture all the sparkle of our light rain but I featured views of the rain clouds - and one of my rain barrels - in my own Wednesday Vignette. It's amazing how a little rain can boost one's spirits!

    1. Maybe Elnoshow is teasing us, but we were thrilled to get a bit of rain. :) I have a rain barrel shot too, but was already pushing the "vignette" concept.

  3. Oh - love the seed heads! The Cleveland Salvia reminds me of the tiered flowers of Phlomis. Wonder if I could grow it here...? I know it's not funny, but your crack about El Noshow made me laugh... I'm glad you got at least a little rain. Your Calothamnus is competing with Michelle Obama's Versace gown - it's so sparkly!

    1. S. clevelandii 'Winnifred Gilman' said to be cold hardy down to 10F, but you'd have to somehow keep it dry enough. It has the iconic California chapparal fragrance--some people find it too intense--I love it.
