"Gardening is largely a question of mixing one sort of plant with another sort of plant, and of seeing how they marry happily together;  and if you see that they don't marry happily, then you must hoick one of them out and be quite ruthless about it."
--Vita Sackville-West

Hoick on, oh Gardener!  Hoick on!   But not in the area in the photo (Huntington West Entrance Garden).  It looks dandy.

  1. Beautiful shot. I need to hoick more.

  2. Love VS-W's garden writing. There's a Twitter feed of it that's a soothing antidote to the rest of what I follow on there: @thegardenvsw

    1. A gifted writer who happened to turn her attention to gardening, lucky for us.

  3. I need to hoick more too. I've a horrid color combination in the back border - pale pink Eustoma, which looked great last year with Yucca 'Bright Star' but looks terrible with the self-planted Gaillardia 'Arizona Sun'. The Eustoma needs to move elsewhere but I'm waiting for the return of cooler weather, which (ha!) will be a while in coming. Meanwhile, the pink Eustoma may end up in IaVoM every week.

    1. I'm so enjoying my Eustoma, so pink Eustoma in all your IaVoM posts will be good. Yes, 'Arizona Sun' with pale pink might be a little unbalanced. I stuck with white and purple--they go with everything.

The flowers are so pretty. Do you have yours staked? Mine fall over--I gave them little wire cylinders to hold them up.

Lots of hot weather ahead. Not. Happy. :(

  4. Hoick... what a great word! Might just have to adopt that one to my vocabulary. And, I most definitely need to put it into more frequent practice, and be ruthless about it.

    1. Isn't it fun? One of the definitions is " a jerky, elevated shot in cricket." I just hoicked a root stock sucker on one of my roses yesterday.

The ruthless part is the hard part!
