Its Been A Long Week

 Just leaves lost, here.

I've been indoors all week because of the wind, and feel very fortunate to have an indoors to be in.  Hundreds of homes were lost to fire in Southern California this week.  The largest of the six active fires has burned more than 200 square miles (518 square kilometers).

As close to the garden as I can get this week:
I'm still painting, and lucky to be able to.  No complaints.  No complaints at all.
Doing the baseboards and window frames.  A brighter white for more contrast with the barely off-white walls.
I hope to garden again soon.

  1. No rain in the forecast

"There’s no sign of any thirst-slaking moisture for Southern California in the foreseeable future. The upper atmosphere over North America is locking into a pattern with a very strong ridge near the Pacific Coast, a strengthening trough in the East, and a freight train of northwest flow and cold air funneling into the eastern half of the U.S. and Canada. This pattern will force any potential rain-making low pressure systems well north of Southern and Central California for at least the next 10 days, if current model projections hold." -- by Bob Henson, Category 6, Weather Underground, today. Actually, mid-January according to the NWS climate prediction maps. Ugh.

Yes, sweet lady, we have to have patience as Ruth Bancroft said she learned from gardening.

    1. Can't think about that lack-of-rain forecast. Just can't can't can't, for mental health's sake.

      Patience, yes, and endurance.

  2. Your proficiency with the paintbrush is impressive! The fires are beyond depressing. I've been doing a bit of watering in the morning hours but not much else. I've been congested, almost as if I had a cold but I think it's probably a reaction to particulates in the air stemming from the fires.

    1. Family business, grew up with it.

No smoke here--yet--thankfully. Eyes seem to dry out between every blink, so dry, dry dry. :(

  3. Fierce windy here overnight, but the fires have been small - and our firefighters working hard.

Have seen reports of severe air pollution in California.

  4. Amazing what a bit of white paint can do! Your house is lovely! As is your garden. I hate to hear about the wildfires. My heart goes out to all those affected by the fires and to those brave souls who fight them.

    1. Thanks! New Paint refreshed everything. At least I did something useful when I was stuck indoors. The firefighters endure terrible conditions and risk their lives and their health. They are truly brave souls.

  5. The fires California is going trough are also every day on the news overhere. So terrible that so many people lost theire so beloved homes. I think it's time that our worldleaders take the climatechanging serious. Extreem drought in your country, extreme rainfall and more, and heavier storms in Europe. The sealevel is rising. I don't want to think about what is going to happen with the village that I live in build 2.20 meters below sealevel. Stay safe Hoover Boo.

    1. We here in California are working to reduce carbon emissions even if the national government ignores the warning signs of disaster. Everyone can do something to reduce carbon and pollution. The people of the Netherlands know all about rising sea levels and are much more aware than are the foolish people in charge in Washington right now.

      Rose hugs back, Marijke!

  6. I've turned off the irrigation but I'll have to run the drip soon. It's bone dry. I even did some hand watering this morning.

Hoping for rain to help with the fires...

  7. I think my holiday spirit is pegged to the humidity level. I need to paint the main room, and your results give me courage.

    1. Mine, too. Optimism definitely linked to the humdity level, so it's low at the moment. Good luck with the paint project, it can be done! Home Depot Marquee paint is a very good value, and they can match colors from other brands.
