Taking Pains Is Painful

Our marvelous May Gray suddenly vanished on Saturday.  The weekend was going to be hot.  I saved some flowers that would have otherwise been toasted by the heat and used them to create a bouquet.

Leucadendron and Eucalyptus for foliage.  Roses 'Peter Mayle', 'Rose Rhapsody', 'Rouge Royale', 'Comtesse de Provence', an orange sport of 'Gardens Of The World', plus a white Eustoma, and three Dahlias for flowers.  I decided to take pains to make sure the bouquet looked as good as I could make it.

"V" shape, mmm...okay, but move the single Dahlia in the tiny vase over to the right.  Oh.  What about that empty space circled in blue?
Add a couple of pink 'Belindas Dream' roses still in bud.  I added the clippers and trimmed foliage on the table to the photo.
Hmm...  That Dahlia is getting hidden, and the clipper blades should be visible.
 The clippers look better now...
Pulled the Dahlia up a bit so it shows more.  Mess on that left side?
I went and got three more 'Gardens Of The World' flowers.  Stuck on the side--no.  Two roses squeezed out of view.   Empty spot between the Leucadendron stems bothers me.
There!  Better!  Okay?  Finito?  Ah, remember to move the solitary Dahlia over...
Mmm...I moved a Eucalyptus stem from one side to the other in hopes of better balance.  Eucalyptus on the upper left still messy looking.  Should the trimmings and clipper be in the photo or not?  Oh, yecch:  didn't even notice the water marks on the table.  Grrr!
 Enough!  I don't care!  I'm done.
Taking pains is painful.   Maybe I learned something from this exercise in flower arranging--I hope.

  1. Beautiful dahlia. I'll take it. Bouquet looks nice. A full filled circle. I was quite surprised when I woke up to sunshine this morning. One day cool and drizzly, next day too hot and bright.

    1. It was wonderful to have weeks of flowers that were no sun bleached, weeks of foliage not sunburnt!

Dahlias have become my big summer thing the past few years. Love them!

  3. You are good at expressing your pain. I don't think this should be painful. This exercise should be joyful. Look at all of those flowers you have to work with. It is a beautiful exercise.

    1. I think I was grumpy because the heat was a reminder that S----r is coming. Sigh.

  5. Ha! That's just how some of my vases end up getting stuffed. Your's was beautiful in all its incarnations. To have that many roses on hand would be heaven. Despite more compost, mulch, and fertilizer this year, mine have been very disappointing thus far. A few have stubbornly refused to bloom at all and the blooms are light on the rest. I think I need to loosen up the spigot a bit.

    1. They don't need a lot of water, but they do need some. Even just one deep soak twice a month makes a big difference.

  6. I find it painful that the camera manages to catch details, that my eye didn't notice.
but - your flowers fill a lovely lush circle - sigh!

  7. The Leuco needs to be shorter. That's all . Your roses are sumptuous. I have very few pinks and reds anymore so I am enjoying seeing yours.
