Seattle For A Day

Photobucket
Yesterday, it drizzled.  Suddenly the weather turned Southern California into Seattle, or Surrey.  Plants that normally escape notice looked entirely appropriate.  The Japanese Maples gloried in the wet;  their leaves glowed, enhanced by water.  In our normal brilliant sunshine, they usually look a little weary.  Not yesterday, because it drizzled.

Suddenly the warm apricot roses of bright days looked strange.  The plain shrubs and trees were the unexpected stars of the gloom, with their diamond-coating of moisture.

Photobucket Gardening was impossible with everything soggy and dripping.  However, there was no need to keep checking the vulnerable pepper seedlings, just growing their first true leaves.  No chance of them drying out yesterday, allowing more time to admire the maples.  Weather is a part of plant selection, isn't it?  Not only for the health of the plant;  rather, in a purely visual way.  Certain plants seem to enhance certain types of weather better than others.  Certain plants are better able to display their beauties in rain and grey.  I never realized that before--our periods of rain are so brief.

Seattle for a day:  delightful and enlightening...though...sunshine tomorrow would be nice.

  1. That is a great way to look at a grey day. Maples do stand out in that sort of weather, probably explains why we have some lovely gardens full of them.

  3. You captured something I haven't been able to...that change from what looks out of place, to what fits. Sun to rain. Then it all switches back!

  5. To me it's almost unbelievable to have only a little bit of rain. We have lot's of. Maybe that's the reason my country is feeled with green and I like so much to see your flowers in the sun. your rose with the waterdrop is gorgeous.
