Lagerstroemia 'Cherry Mocha'
A post done in haste--I'm simply overwhelmed with things to do lately.

An Iris in August? What???
'Absolute Treasure' is the name of this one:
Erica--unsure of the species, still. The Erica has really grown over the past two years after struggling for several years before that:'Molineux' rose with Salvia 'Waverly' in the background:Pentas with Agave 'Snow Glow':The last Leucanthemums for the year amid Cuphea purpurea:'Tamora':'Souvenir de la Malmaison':Pelargonium peltatum:The Pelargonium with 'Cherry Mocha' in the background:
The Dahlias are not having a great year so far. Still, an underperforming Dahlia is better than no Dahlia:
Hydrangeas. They don't underperform:The last 'Queen Mum' Agapanthus flower of the season:'Yves Piaget':Okay, foliage....There's a Alstroemeria in there...The Lavender Pentas that spent spring under a mass of Sweet Peas...they did the Pentas no serious harm:Inevitably, 'The Ambridge Rose' ...and 'Snowbird'
Those are what blooms I could photograph. As to the sadly dying 'Pom Pom' Leucadendron...
...it went into the green waste bin Thursday. There was a sprouted Avocado seed underneath it.
How did everything get so hectic all of a sudden? Here's hoping your August is more serene.
Gorgeous blooms especially that Cherry Mocha. It's stunning. You are correct re: the dahlias. Unlike your's I am having a great dahlia year which is quite rare. Plants have been blooming for well over a week and though a little short are bushy and healthy. There are few plants that have such a range and saturation of colours, sizes and shapes. Love them all. Hope things calm down soon.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear you are getting beautiful Dahlias. They are the best things about summer--well one of the best things. Just as you say: impressive array of colors and flower forms. Saturated colors are my thing, here where so many flowers can bleach out from the endless sunshine.
DeleteFor a post done in haste, you certainly covered a lot but then that's a testimonial to your impressive garden. A bearded Iris in August is remarkable and that one is aptly named! Are you going to plant that avocado seed?
ReplyDeleteJust so much else needs attention right now. Whew!
DeleteWas surprised and happy to see that Iris since it didn't flower this spring. 'Clarence' reblooms at all different times, but 'Absolute Treasure' has been stingier.
No, two Avocado trees is enough, and grown from seed they can take 8-10 years to produce fruit, and you never know about fruit quality from a seedling.
Ha! No, my August is not more serene, but I am forcing myself to take a moment, breathe, and visit the blogs I've been missing out on for the past few weeks. Preparing myself mentally for three weeks of construction activity that will probably damage the garden and I don't have a good idea of what to expect or protect ahead of time. I'll just do my best and feel good about that, then tackle the challenges as they come along. You've had a lot going on. Hoping you have moments of rest, peace, and contemplation.
ReplyDeleteWe gardeners all depend on our gardens for peace and serenity, don't we? And thankfully, we get it. :)
DeleteBest wishes for success and not too many hassles on your construction. It's always disruptive, even when it goes well.
In recent years I became aware of many Lagerstroemia grown in Seattle, which kind of shocked me, thinking they'd prefer warmer whether. Your 'Cherry Mocha' is stunning. I bet the trunk is lovely too, for me its part of the attraction.
ReplyDeleteA dying 'Pom Pom' Leucadendron is better in the recycling bin... it's not fun to look at it every day. It's removal clear quite a space. An oppotunity? What's the shurb/small tree growing on the right behind it?
Chavli
I think it was Walters Gardens (wholesaler/plant breeder in MN) that was one of the entities developing more cold-hardy or root-hardy Lagerstroemias. 'Cherry Mocha' is one of them, though we don't need cold-hardy here. It was a freebie--and doesn't mind a lack of cold!
DeleteThe 'Ruth Bancroft' Alyogyne gets 'Pom Pom's site. That should work.
The shrub/small tree to the right of 'Pom Pom's spot sort of behind the pillar is one of the black-foliaged Lagerstroemias, 'Ebony Embers'.
Wow, things are looking great! What got into that Iris, a great surprise. Damn on the Leucadendron. I love the Lagerstroemia 'Dynamite' flanking the house, that's nice. Always your roses are perfection.
ReplyDeleteFor August, not terrible. Roses are having a good year, and most are long established now--that helps!
