Holy Fourth of July

Today it was reported that two American soldiers were killed in eastern Afghanistan. In Iran, a young woman named Neda is dead, thousands have been arrested, and many beaten simply because they wanted their votes counted. Others killed have vanished, leaving their families to agonize about what happened.

On this cool, bright, quiet morning, as I cut roses and listen to the sound of birds while dew glistens on the grass, the Fourth of July has a holy meaning. It is a clarion call to remember those unable to revel in the beauty of a peaceful day.
