What's Going To Die Tonight?

Are some of my darlings destined for plant heaven?

This may be the coldest night in more than a decade.  All the potted succulents are huddled together on the patio for a little extra protection...

But there is not much I can do for the ones in the ground...cover with a sheet?  I looked up Aloe dichotoma, which should be okay to 28...it won't get that cold...will it?  We're at 400 feet above sea level.  It stays two or three degrees warmer than the flatland around.

A. ferox, grown from a wee pup...

I put a bucket over a special Echeveria:

We shall see what the morning brings...plants, or mush...

  1. Hoovb, can you bring them close to the wall of the building and make a tent over them with a tarp or even a sheet(s)? Put a lamp under the sheet. That's what I have done, and I have not lost any plants down to 18 degrees. The bucket is a good idea for anything small enough or a storage tub for bigger things. For plants in the ground water the ground around the plant, cover with a sheet but try to keep the sheet off the plant with something taller - a chair or poles or a ladder or whatever. Where the sheet/tarp touches the plant it will freeze. Weight the sheet to the ground with no gaps since you are trying to hold the heat of the ground in. Your outside tropicals may need a lamp, too. It works. Go save your plants.

  2. Your post just scared me, so I went online to check the weather forecast for San Diego tonight. Lowest temperature is supposed to go down to 35 degrees Fahrenheit, so all plants should be fine. I am crossing my fingers for your beautiful succulents.

  3. I know I'm about 18 months too late, but for next time, you can string some old Christmas lights (not LEDs) under a sheet/blanket to keep delicate plants warm.
