They are decently fast growers, seems to me, without being too fast. Too fast is so often weedy. 'Swanes Golden' is not weedy. It's a more manageable size (30 feet) than the species (100 feet).
Spring 2007. They are there--just barely. Look close. Perhaps an inch above the wall...

See them? I circled the tips. Does that help?

Spring 2008. Not all that much bigger. (Ignore the one on the left for the purposes of this post.)

Fall 2009. Progress.

Spring 2010. Now they're going!

Spring 2011. Looking more and more significant in the view. If they do not look so golden, it is the dull light and heavy marine layer, not the Cypress themselves. The Acer palmatum has also become decidedly more impressive.

Update June 2012: Growing and bulking up. The foreground Hydrangea has done some growing too.
Update November 2013. These last three photos also show the progress of Pittosporum 'Wrinkled Blue', to the right of the rightmost Cypress.
It's a privilege to watch trees grow. You just have to live in one place long enough to see it.

I so agree; a real treat. Thanks for the journey!

Love the photos of your garden. My Monterey cypress are just hitting their stride this year too -- very exciting when that happens.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to buy a couple of these at my local nursery this Saturday. You convinced me that they are not too slow growing.
