The Neighbors Dug Out Their Lawn And Put In A WHAT?

A vineyard!

The neighbors dug out the lawn and put in a vineyard, and they did it just right, too.  The rows are oriented north to south, to maximize sun exposure:

The drip irrigation is just like what you might see in Napa--that black pipe along the bottom of the trellis:

Entirely professional, right down to the hardware on the end posts and the tubes protecting the base of the plants.

It's beautifully done.  Why not have a vineyard instead of a lawn?  Honey!  Get the shovels!

  1. Well-done, but did they accent it with any ornamental plantings (like the ubiquitous lavenders, etc)? A neighbor here showed me his backyard planting (cul-de-sac lot - a large back yard) years ago - the sloping expanse with nothing but all kinds of wine grapes...it was about perfect.

    1. There was a pre-existing planter maybe 3'x10' of the also ubiquitous Agapanthus by the front door. Great idea about lavenders--lovely plus drawing pollinators for the grapes. The Agapanthus only bloom for about three or four weeks, and later than grapes.

  2. A homeowner in the St. Louis area recently won a long battle with his city over his front yard vegetable garden. We could all benefit from monoculture relief, couldn't we? Here's his story with photos: http://tinyurl.com/cw3wlev

    1. Well exactly. Have a lawn if you want, or a veggie patch, or a vineyard, or a rose garden...odd how Americans are so fanatic about being individuals, but so many of us to conform to front lawns...

  3. And you have the climate for it down there, too. Wonder what variety of grapes they planted?

    1. I wonder too! Didn't see any tags on the plants. Not hot enough here for Cabernet or Merlot...

  4. Love it! Wish someone would do this in my neighborhood - Mar Vista (adjacent to Venice Beach), which is quite eclectic in style and rather village-like. I think people would be very intrigued and excited. We've got a number of front yard orchards and vegetable gardens, even a few chicken flocks, but so far, no vineyards.

    1. Beloved lived in Mar Vista in the olden times (1980s). He got his car stereo stolen three times. Otherwise, he liked the area. Sounds like it might be better now. :)

Need the right grape for the coast, probably a German cool-summer type?
