Can't get through.
The last wind storm pulled 'Laguna' off the fence and snapped many canes. Time to clean up. A lot to clean up.
I'd placed some plants in Laguna's shade for the heat wave. They got a bit smashed when Laguna fell on them. You can make out the Kalanchloe beharnensis and two Epiphyllums, if your imagination is good.
I thought I'd be able to thread a rope through the mass and pull it all back up and tie it to the fence. Hah! All I could do was start chopping. There was no other option. Too many broken and badly damaged canes thoroughly tangled with live growth.
I extricated the Kalanchloe. It was damaged. The Epiphyllums were mostly okay.
I started at 10:00 am. I was mostly done by 7:30 pm. There's a pile of clippings to get into the green waste bin, but the rose itself is completed. I was planning to do this next winter, but it's done now. I must give it a deep soaking and some fertilizer to help it re-foliate quickly. It made a nice privacy screen.
Minor disaster, handled. The light was fading quickly by the time I got all the tools put away. I needed to see something besides a prickly rose cane.
Ah, that's good.

What a mess to have to clean up, no doubt it was very prickly too, I hope you didn't get too many wounds.

Just one small slash, which wasn't much at all. Good gloves!
DeleteThat thing was huge! I hate major garden tasks that are forced on me, but it's nice in this case that you're able to check something off the chores list six months early! Hooray!
ReplyDeleteHow long until it refoliates? I've got some major rose slug damage and I'm hoping those canes can leaf back out.
We are going to find out how long for refoliation. I will update. I soaked it this morning and gave it a bit dose of fertilizer.
DeleteI'm wondering if our terrible double heat wave might have killed off rose slugs for this year. Well I can dream, can't I?
Oh my!
ReplyDeleteDifferent kind of danger garden.
DeleteI wondered how you were going to manage that chore. I'm sorry you had to take drastic action and hope 'Laguna' regains her foliage quickly. At least there's little chance of any more wind damage to that plant this year!
ReplyDeleteHopefully not! I was going to do it this year but just ran out of winter.
DeleteThat is one very prickly rose - you must have been in shoulder high leather gauntlets!
ReplyDeleteIt's now pruned so handsomely that I imagine it will quickly reestablish itself & be more beautiful than ever.
Wishing you rain,
Suzanne
Elbow length + loppers kept me at a pretty safe distance. I think the pruning did it good. Thanks for the wish of rain. We are crossing all fingers and toes that the upcoming winter is a rainy one.
DeleteWhat a thorny job! And the storm that tore it loose must have been tremendously powerful. I'm cheering 'Laguna' on in re-creating your privacy and a lovely showy presence again.
ReplyDeleteThanks, MulchMaid. There are already leaf buds swelling on the canes. :^)
DeleteI have fence blow-over here that laid Reine des Violettes low. A 4 day weekend, upcoming will put her to rights. No thorns.
ReplyDeleteI love the smooth ones. They are so much easier to deal with.
DeleteAll those broken bits of Kalanchloe could be used to start new plants, if you are so inclined.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try that. Thanks!
DeleteI am afraid you will have to watch those canes get badly sunburnt...
ReplyDeleteYes, exactly what I was worried about, Masha. Luckily we're getting some May Grey for a few days, after that I've got several old white sheets to toss over it for the hottest part of the day--what else could I do? That and drown it with water.
