The neighbors a few houses down raised turkeys this year. I could hear turkey gobbles during the day all summer. When Thanksgiving came, only "Lucky" remained--he was the smallest, so he was pardoned. The rest were Not Lucky. They were dinner.
Lucky is a Royal Palm Turkey, a heritage breed first developed in the 1920's.
He's a handsome guy.
With a dozen chickens (hens) for company, Lucky is not alone. He's not the boss, though. Rosie is the boss:
It's okay, Lucky and Rosie. I'm vegetarian.

Amazing pictures! How did you get the birds so still so the images were not blurry? Funny that Rosie rules the roost.
ReplyDeleteThey are very calm birds, used to having quite a few people around. They were not moving fast.
DeleteRosie is 1 tough old girl!
I'm glad Lucky got a pardon - as turkeys go, he's very handsome.
ReplyDeleteHe acted like he knew it, too.
DeleteFrom this day on I will be vegatarian......Lucky is fortunately so lucky!!! Your pictures are all of an amazing beauty. Rosy is lovely too, but a bit bossy, haha.
ReplyDeleteThat look in her eyes--Rosie knew who was boss. She is six years old!
DeleteWe have a flock of wild turkeys roaming the streets of Davis. They're not fazed by cars or people. I always enjoy seeing them!
ReplyDeleteThey eat plenty of bugs, which is not such a bad thing for a garden. :)
DeleteSweet, regal looking birds really. Glad that Lucky was spared!
ReplyDeleteThe wild originals are smart, hardy birds. The modern domesticated version, neither smart nor hardy. This Royal Palm breed is closer to the original, fairly smart, fairly hardy.
DeleteI'm happy Lucky was spared also. He's a beautiful proud bird and it is fun to hear his turkey calls.
Great photos dear Hoover! Lucky certainly is a lucky turkey, I am glad that he was spared.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you, your dear partner, Boris and Natasha.
xoxoxo ♡
Oh how horrible :( he's such a handsome boy. Did your neighbours give him to you?
