The roses seem a little earlier than usual, but the "Dutch" Iris are right on time.
We've had three days of 90F weather, and look at 'Belinda's Dream':
'Geranium Red':
The Clematis are about a month early. This is 'Jackmanii Superbum':
'The Endeavour' opens coral, finishes pink:
A particularly beautiful 'William Shakespeare 2000':
New rose this year to the garden, 'Radiant Perfume' is mildewed but pushing out a flower. The mildew is typical for a newly planted rose here. As it establishes, the root system will be able to provide more adequate moisture to the foliage and the mildew will no longer be a problem:
There are quite a few roses open, but most are still in bud.
Now fairly established, 'Young Lycidas' has a marvelous fragrance. Yummmm!
A new little Cotula lineariloba 'Big Yellow Moon', from the back. It's like a daisy without petals.
'Julia Child', always stellar:
'Moondance' is finally doing well. It's taken six or more years. Insufficient water, I think.
Another gem, 'Pink Gruss an Aachen', aka 'Irene Watts'
'Peace'
Compare 'Peace' to 'Flaming Peace', a color sport of the original:
The last flower on Magnolia stellata 'Royal Star'. It bloomed for at least a month; longer than I expected.
'Honey Perfume', taken just as the morning sun rose.
Pink Cistanthe grandiflora (formerly Calandrinia grandiflora) with a violet Bougainvillea as a backdrop:
A quite beautiful garden despite the drought--the one really significant rain storm we got this season came early enough to allow the ground to become and stay moist for weeks. It shows.

Happy GBBD! Your roses are stunning. I'm surprised by the number already in full bloom. Admittedly, I pruned a little late this year but it still seems odd that I've got nothing but a smattering of buds. I think I need to follow your example and get into an annual mulching habit. I've long admired 'Gruss an Aachen' - is it true that it can take some shade?
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised also--I think it was the deep soak they got from that one excellent storm we got.
DeleteI raked back some mulch the other day in an area that is not irrigated, and the soil underneath was moist. Mulch is good.
Gruss, mine are in shade after about 1, and they do well. I would say "some shade" is fine, not "a lot".
I always admire your beautiful roses and imagine that with the large number of them you have that your garden has a delightful rose fragrance wafting on the air! Happy GBBD!
ReplyDeleteThe rose, jasmine, and lavender scents are wonderful, but the orange blossoms are even better!
DeleteOh the heat, I am sorry.
ReplyDeleteBTW Lila had a vet appointment the other day. As we were leaving a sweet pair that could have been Boris and Natasha's twins came in. I had this strange feeling of my worlds not making sense, and expected to see you at the other end of the leash. Of course it wasn't. I so wanted to take a photo of them but my silly barker was demanding we get on our way as soon as possible.
Lila was just defending you from getting covered with white fuzz. For Samoyed owners, dog hair is both a fashion accessory and a condiment.
DeleteAs one who grew up in the inland groves, I loved your comment about the orange blossoms. 'Jackmanii Superbum' is gorgeous, and your roses... [swoons]. Such a beautiful garden -- no wonder you couldn't wait to get home on Thursday!
ReplyDeleteThat orange blossom fragrance is, yes, swoon!
DeleteI didn't think I liked pale roses, but that 'Pink Gruss an Aachen' looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteIt's an excellent little rose.
DeleteYour roses are amazing! I especially like Gruss. If it makes you feel any better, we have had no rain this winter...
ReplyDeleteNo rain?!? Very sorry to hear that! We all want our fellow-plant-lovers to get good rain.
DeleteI think of your garden as having a split personality, with all those beautiful roses...and on the other hand, all that stuff we northerners can't grow.
ReplyDeleteIt is kind of odd, but then again so am I. The gardener is the garden!
DeleteIt was a joy to watch your roses so early in our year, I am pruning my roses last and this week.
ReplyDeleteHappy to share them. Glad you liked them!
DeleteOh to have roses in March! I hope they continue to look this good, in spite of the drought.
ReplyDeleteAn unusually cool summer would be a great thing!
DeleteVery beautiful roses and other blooms dear Hoover, your garden is a tapestry of lovely colours and fragrances.

Thank you Dianne. I hope you are continuing to heal well.
