What a delight! Year-round hummingbirds is the best! Would you like my HummerBar? I don't have enough hummers to make it useful, but you certainly do! Email me and I'll send it to you.
Is this an unusual new species of hummingbird that tolerates its brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles and maybe even strangers?! Mine still take off after any other bird that deigns to come within several feet of the feeder when they're in the same vicinity. In fact, I got buzzed once myself yesterday when I made a poorly timed trip across the patio.
A male or two will try to chase everyone off, but they simply can't sustain the effort very long--there are too many other hummers. The feisty male gives up quickly and--has another drink.
This is so wonderful I can hardly stand it. You must have the happiest hummingbirds in SoCal. Reminds me of Bearpaw Ranch (about 15 minutes away from me), where they go through 5 lb of sugar a day during the summer. At least our feeders don't attract these guys ;~)
This summer my across-the-street neighbor walked out into her back yard to see why her Lab was in hysterics: there was an adult mountain lion lounging in her Eucalyptus. She dragged her dog into the house very, very, very quickly. The cat has since moved on. A bear...can't imagine.
A happy hummer--it's nothing more than they deserve. Great links, thanks!
You are lucky to see such a number of hummers at your feeder! Like Kris, we only see one at a time as they spend more time fighting over territory than drinking from the feeders and flowers. Beautiful pictures!

ReplyDeleteemail sent, but you must let me send you a plant or two in return.
DeleteFabulous. Do you think some of them are babies from the rose bush clutch?
ReplyDeleteYes, "Stretch" and "Wiggles", as I call them because of their feeding habits, are still visiting. I'm happy for them!
DeleteSugar rush, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI know just how they feel!
DeleteThis is too cool!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty wild to watch them all flying in and out. Non-stop action all day long.
DeleteHow beautiful they are, you must mix up a very tasty sugar syrup. :)

Since it has only 2 ingredients, it is the kind of recipe I can manage. ;^)

ReplyDeleteBy planting so many nectar-givers, I've made them lazy!
