Echinopsis oxygona Blooms

The Echinopsis oxygona flowers lasted almost two days instead of only one.  Fragrant, too.  The nasty heat that did this to 'Home Run' rose...
And that wilted the foliage and darkened (but didn't toast) the Dahlia flowers...
...didn't affect the Cosmos...
...or damage the Echinopsis.
The plant has its first offsets, too.  The main plant doesn't have much besides glochids, but the tiny offsets have plentiful spines.
I hope it develops into an oxygona clump someday, with many flowers open at once.  Won't that be a show?
Update:  We saw the baby hawk this morning, along with a sibling!  They seemed well.  Nearby on the street were the barest remains of a kill (blood, a tuft of fur, flies).   Odd how the sight of gore could make one feel optimistic.

  1. Love those blooms! Before reading I saw the rose image and thought "that is one strange cactus bloom!" :)

  2. Good to know what survives and doesn't. Including hawks. Beautiful white blooms on echinopsis. Envious. My dark dahlia has turned white in the center otherwise recovering.

  3. Gorgeous flowers – really impressive. We are not exactly having cacti weather over here in London, more suitable for ferns and such! I am afraid all my dahlias in the ground have rotted away (drowned!) in all the rain we have had, a first for me – only those I still have in pots seem fine although no sign of buds yet. Everything is so late and I am so fed up of rain and grey skies. Lovely to see your cosmos, hope your garden is fairly OK despite the heat wave you are having.
Good luck with your Echinopsis, may it grow well and produce lots of flowers next time!

    1. My poor garden! The big Acer palmatum dropped half its leaves and I suspect one of my Lagerstroemias is about to die. Well, it could be worse--no garden at all. Rotted Dahlias or not, your rain and grey skies sound so comfortable when it is too hot to go outside.

  4. It can be weird what gets toasted and what sails through intense heat, can't it? I wouldn't have thought that Cosmos or Dahlias would do so well. My Eustoma flowers seem unaffected, although some of the foliage is burnt. My daylily foliage looks awful and even some of the flower buds appear singed. I also noticed what seems to be edema on my Agave 'Blue Glow', which really ticked me off (not to say that I wasn't already ticked off to start with).

    1. Wasn't it awful? Our Acer palmatum has dropped half its leaves. The thought of going outside is painful, but there are plants that need misting, and more heat ahead. I'm ready for autumn!

  5. Three blooms is plenty stunning! Pity there's no cactus & succulent show *right now* to capitalize...

    1. It was the first flowering, so I'm excited there will be even better shows eventually. It's been a very easy plant, so far.
