Vignettes from the Huntington today. Above, I like the way the 'Blue Flame' stalk frames the palm behind it, and the way the light hits Aeonium 'Jack Caitlin' in the foreground.
A xeric garden without trees is a flat, hot, oppressive thing. A refuge from the sun is not a rejection of the sun, but rather a search for balance.
Balance of light and shade, of cool and heat.
Balance of tough with tender. Tender without tough is unsustainable, but tough without tender is cruelty.
A little family is framed by towering bamboo, and the orange Clivia in the foreground. Humans at peace with nature. Balance.
Finding balance is a constant effort. The pendulum swings.
Apropos of the little family, of tough and tender, light and dark, cruelty and empathy, balance, balance, a thought for the day:
"True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made."

ReplyDelete(is this one of the new blogger themes they're so excited about?)
Tried the new theme on a whim. I need to add back in the "receive by email" thingy, and the "favorite posts" thingy isn't right.
DeleteI like the font.
My favorite is the first photo - what a great catch! I hope you got at least a little rain. We got almost 1/4th if an inch.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at the palm and then realized oh, it's framed!
DeleteWe got maybe 5/100th of an inch, if that, but anything is welcome, and at least it isn't hot!
Difficult to customize these new themes, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIs it? Uh oh! Haven't tried yet--have to be in the mood for that stuff.
DeleteYep, it appears to be tricky. Hopefully that wasn't the intent.
DeleteStunning shots, thoughtful words.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ourlaw!
DeleteSuch a sweet, thoughtful post... I absolutely agree - balance is key. Please oh please, let the pendulum swing back!
ReplyDeleteIt will. It always does. Only--how long must we wait?
DeleteSo pretty! I love the backlit cactus in the 2nd picture. The new blog theme is nice too!
ReplyDeleteOne day I will return to the Huntington ! Lovely lovely photos .
