Mystery Agave

The label says "Agave Hybrid".  What's your guess?  I've looked at it several times over the past few months at a local nursery.  It's been sitting alone, one of a kind, waiting to be purchased.  "What is that?", I kept wondering.  I've stuck firmly to a policy of not buying any Aloe or Agave without knowing what it was.  But today I had a 50% off coupon, so home it came.
Growth may reveal its identity.  It couldn't possibly be what I think it is, could it?  Not for 9.99.  It better not be what I hope it isn't.  I don't want any more of those.

  1. Tags like that always drive me crazy! My local botanic garden sells plants labeled like that all the time. I've no idea what your mystery agave is either, other than very attractive. Hopefully, it won't turn out to be the agave equivalent of Audrey from 'Little Shop of Horrors'.

    1. Or even worse than 'Audrey', an Agave americana.

I always joke about that very common plant name "Succulent assorted". There are a whole lot of those!

    2. That kind of looks like my agave 'snow glow', which I think is a variegated version of 'Blue Glow'... Any chance it could be that?

    3. Those tiny red teeth, those arms gracefully, ever so slightly upturned at the ends. It couldn't possibly be what you don't want it to be, very much looks like what you think it might be...

  2. I think you made a good buy. When I got to looking closely at this plant I found it very beautiful. It is not just yellow and green but there is a lovely light turquoise-green stripe separating those two colors and then there are the dark red thorns. Very attractive.

  3. Looks like A. desmetiana 'Variegata' grown from a bulbil, rather than a pup. It takes them a while to start putting out leaves with that swan-like curve. Sue

    1. Yeah, and that's what I'm hoping it's not! At least it didn't cost much.

    2. And that was the reason for my policy of not buying unlabeled Agaves...oh, well.

    2. I've streamed it and gotten dvd's from Netflix--isn't it great? does it go more than 3 seasons?

    3. The new season 4 has been running the past 3 weeks.

  5. I think I picked up that very plant and almost bought it! I don't have a place to put it yet so I had to set it down. I'm glad it found it's way to your hands and garden. Can't wait to see how it turns out! :)

  6. My money is on Agave desmettiana 'Variegata' as well but I think it's still too early to say for sure. Please keep us posted.

    1. Yeah, darn it! My rule to not buy an unlabelled plant is a good one. I wish I'd stuck to it.
