Some Of This Year's Dahlias

'Go Go Mix Purple'

'Duet':
 'Mystic Wizard'
 'Arabian Nights'
I'll have to dig out the label--can't remember offhand
 'Go Go Mix Pink'
 'Color Spectacle'
'Color Spectacle' with Hemerocallis 'Bella Sera'
 'Avignon'
 A bigger 'Avignon'
 'Avignon' outliers.

'Arabian Nights' again. I've had this one a decade, at least.  It has come back every year without fail.
'Funny Face' is late--dug up because I thought the clump had rotted.  The disturbance slowed it down, but didn't kill it.  It has survived to bloom again.

Dahlias make summer fun--or at least as fun as endless sunshine and hot weather can be.

  1. I am so envious. I can't even get the things to come out of the ground

    1. ????? If even I can grow them, can't everyone?

  2. Oh, so beautiful and luscious. I've been eagerly anticipating the flowering of my own Dahlias, all dug up and replanted last fall in my cutting garden (my old raised veggie bed). I have buds but no open flowers yet. Do you pinch your Dahlias?

    1. I do not pinch them. They slap me, scream "Harvey Weinstein!" and tell me they are going to press charges.

  3. Your dahlias are well ahead of mine but I noted that those at the local botanic garden are also late in blooming so maybe our persistent marine layer and cooler-than-usual temperatures are having an impact. Seeing 'Duet' in your garden makes me wish I'd picked that one up as well when I brought home 'Otto's Thrill'. I hope it hasn't been too hot yet out your way!

    1. I'll take persistent marine layer any day over early Dahlias. It's been fairly pleasant so far--heat usually starts getting miserable around July 4th--oh joy.

'Duet' is really pretty and very easy. Me likey!

  4. I have to get some Dahlias! Yours are gorgeous. I see one in a cage, is that for support or anti-rabbit? Do snails or other things nibble these?

    1. That is for support. They will fall over once they get tall enough. A tomato cage is much easier than stakes. Snails will attack, yes. Haven't seen a snail in the garden since 2011--that is the advantage of drought.

  5. My Dahlias failed spectacularly this year- exactly 1 came up and at this moment it is still under 10 inches all. So thank you for the opportunity to look at yours ! I had Arabian nights many years ago it did well for me too. I am now even more grateful for the success of the Zinnias.

    1. Sorry to hear that. Do you have heavy soil?

My Zinnias have flower buds: whee!!! Such happy, fun flowers. And butterflies visit.

    2. Hoov, I think the problem was with the tubers-I bought from a different source and was they were eeny weeny. Going back to Swan Island for next year !

    3. I buy the cheapo-kind, the three-clumps-to-a-plastic-bag-for-$7.98.

  6. Your color selections are nice. I like dahlias I don't know why I don't have any this year. These pictures make me wish I had planted some.

    1. The effort/problems vs. payoff ratio is excellent! Lots of flowers for not much work. Maybe next year? :-)

  7. Dahlias dont like me (or, maybe less personally, our heat) but looking at yours is great! Such great colors!

    1. The heat, yes. They like it warm, not broiling. I agree the colors are wonderful: bright and saturated.
