Garden Shop Dog And Advice From Mark Twain

I met this sweet little Store Dog at a local garden shop.  A rerun of Ken Burns "Mark Twain" was on TV the other night, and Twain was quoted as follows:

Upon arrival [at the Pearly Gates of Heaven] do not speak to St. Peter until spoken to.  It is not your place to begin.

When applying for a ticket avoid trying to make conversation.  If you must talk let the weather alone.  St. Peter cares not a damn for the weather.

You can ask him for his autograph--there is no harm in that--but be grateful and don't remark that it is one of the penalties of greatness.  He has heard that before.

Don't try to kodak him.  Hell is full of people who have made that mistake.

Leave your dog outside.  Heaven goes by favor.  If it went by merit you would stay out, and your dog would go in.

  3. So true! I'm hoping that all my dogs who have undoubtedly made it in will convince St. Pete (we're close) to allow me through the pearly gates despite my many fleas er flaws.

  4. I was startled by the use of 'kodak' as a verb -- but on looking it up found the company was older than I'd realized. Now that its technology is in the rear-view mirror and its brand fading fast, I wonder how much longer the word will even be understood. OTOH, CardiB 's 'Bodak Yellow'...

    1. I had to think about it for a second myself, but the use of that as a verb was a charming anachronism.

An older version of "tweeting", or "instagramming". Those, too, shall pass.

I googled (hmmm) some "define"s; George Eastman pulled "kodak" out of nowhere as a name for his camera back in 1888. "Bodak yellow" is an homage to "kodak black", but had no essential meaning in itself; "kodak black" means--at times--undersized genitalia, and it is the stage name of a rapper, bringing the meaninglessness of it all full circle.

  5. Every garden store should have a dog - and perhaps a cat too.
