Hoodie in the Ericas

On Monday, a visitor wearing a bright pink hoodie, wandering the South African Erica field at the UC Santa Cruz arboretum, caught my eye.
 So did the Cape Ericas.

E. verticillata is growing in my own garden, inspired by our Santa Cruz visit in 2016.  So far it has been a wonderful shrub, despite its preference for acidic soil.  (I added soil sulfur at planting.)  E. verticillata is classified as extinct in the wild.  Its extinction is likely due to humans picking all the flowers off all the wild plants because the flowers are so beautiful.

    1. I hope you get to visit it, Kris. Plant treasures abound. It was not the ideal time to visit, but it was still great.

  2. Hiking among erica, without a hoodie in blistering heat, today.

  5. How funny - I was just this morning looking through a book with Ericas, and I got hung up on one of those Cape Ericas - they are so pretty... And here you are, posting a vignette full of them! What a weird coincidence, but maybe I should take it for what it is - time is rife for Ericas! Thanks for the inspiration. :D
