On Monday, a visitor wearing a bright pink hoodie, wandering the South African Erica field at the UC Santa Cruz arboretum, caught my eye.
So did the Cape Ericas.
E. verticillata is growing in my own garden, inspired by our Santa Cruz visit in 2016. So far it has been a wonderful shrub, despite its preference for acidic soil. (I added soil sulfur at planting.) E. verticillata is classified as extinct in the wild. Its extinction is likely due to humans picking all the flowers off all the wild plants because the flowers are so beautiful.
E. verticillata:
Not E. verticillata
Erica canaliculata
"Wednesday Vignette" is a garden blogger's meme created by Flutter and Hum. Have a great Wednesday!

A visit to the Santa Cruz Arboretum too! I'm so envious.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get to visit it, Kris. Plant treasures abound. It was not the ideal time to visit, but it was still great.
DeleteHiking among erica, without a hoodie in blistering heat, today.
ReplyDeleteYou lost me at "blistering heat". The rest of it sounds heavenly!
Delete“HOODIE IN THE ERICAS”...I had no idea where that title was going. Fun! (and beautiful images)
ReplyDeleteErica in the 'hood didn't quite work, you see.
DeleteOOooo, pretty pretty blooms and the hoodie isn't bad either.
ReplyDeleteCheerful colors on both!
DeleteHow funny - I was just this morning looking through a book with Ericas, and I got hung up on one of those Cape Ericas - they are so pretty... And here you are, posting a vignette full of them! What a weird coincidence, but maybe I should take it for what it is - time is rife for Ericas! Thanks for the inspiration. :D
ReplyDeleteIt's density!
DeleteThey are very pretty, and hummers!
