Huntington Eye Candy

Kniphofia 'Christmas Cheer' was flowering throughout the Entrance Garden.  This is a particularly long-blooming Kniphofia and clumps can get 10' wide (3 m)

The Rill was quite restrained;  mostly foliage texture.
Those Yucca rostratas have grown really fast.
Aeonium 'Jack Caitlin' glowing in the Desert Garden
 Aloe 'David Verity'
Funny how Agaves will spear falling leaves.
The winter light was particularly beautiful
It was easy to take beautiful images.
 Aloe elegans

 Boojum

May your New Year be beautiful.

  1. Thanks for the pics. I meant to drive down from the Bay Area and visit the Huntington this holiday break... didn't happen. What I really wanted to see were the aloe blooms so perfect that you had several in this post.

    1. Sorry you didn't get the opportunity. The Aloes are a little later this year, so maybe you'll get the chance this winter.

    2. The Aloe elegans was quite stunning. "elegans" is apt, as it is attractive out of flower as well. It went on my "want" list.

    1. Thank you ks, Happy New Year back atcha to you and your family.

The light was magical. It was so lovely to be there. The 4" of rain we got Nov/Early Dec made almost everything look its best.

It's actually sort of "cold" here--topping out at around 58F a couple of days.

  3. I love the backlit shots in particular. I recently acquired 2 'Jack Catlin' Aeoniums from Annie's and I hope to have a solid block of them like The Huntington has one day. Are you able to grow Kniphofia in your own garden? They don't seem to want to grow in mine.

    Happy new year, HB!

    1. Happy New Year Kris!

I've always wanted 'Jack'--it glows. Now I know who sells it--thanks!

I tried Kniphofia once but had the mistaken impression it didn't want much water, so didn't give it any, and it perished. I might try again given the opportunity, but not one that gets 10' wide. There were a bunch growing at the San Diego Botanic and they were doing great. Hummingbirds, you know.

  4. I'll take candy 4669. Soft light and soft grey foliage, quite dreamy.

  5. Whoah, is that an owl up in the tall...whatever?

That is some fantastic winter light, with photographs that do it justice. Hard to pick out a favorite. The entrance rill garden may not be very floral at the moment, but certainly looks healthy and happy. I guess this is the season where plants experience the least stress?

Two-tone Kniphofias: More like "eye Kandy Korn", amirite? I'll be here all week.

    1. Youerrite! :)

In the Boojum? I was trying to figure it out. It had a sweet musical call but I could not see it from a better angle. Not an owl for sure, though this morning in the darkness there was one hooting away in the Eucalyptus two houses up. Hoo-hoo, hoo HOO! I wish it had been light enough to see it.

Winter is like spring here. Autumn is sort of like spring here, too. Spring is...also like Spring. It's Summer that's the bummer.

  6. Yummmy candy. Great to see growing/blooming plants this time of year. They get my garden mind stirring.

    1. People with a "real" winter have more time to think and plan (and rest!) than those of us who have 365 days of "out there", so there are advantages...

  7. If I were starting again, I'd choose all these plants. They look great and I know they are not thirsty. I agree with Kris, the backlit photos are extra wonderful. Happy 2019, HB.
