One Arm Gardening

Freesia flowers soon

One-arm gardening is limited, but still possible.  Just looking around is healing.
Leucospermum 'Tango'

Aloe petricola, Aloe x megalacantha(?)

 Aloe aculeata
I can plant from 4" pots into soft soil.

Weed!  When all you can do is weed, it is reasonably fun.

Water.  We're unfortunately having a dry winter.

Shop for plants!  Need I say more?

It's lovely to be out with the birds and the plants and the sky above, one arm or two.
Leucospermum 'Tango'
After writing the above, an appointment with the orthopedist.  It's been a week now since I fell.  New cast and new position to hold:
Stay like this for the next five weeks:

So maybe no weeding or anything else for five more weeks.  At least I got to pick the cast color!

  1. So how can you hold the camera and snap the button with one hand?

  2. Oh my. When you do something you don't go halfway! I imagine you're already a little stir-crazy. That's one of my main reservations about getting my knee done - I keep finding reasons to put it off even though it's clearly gotten worse.

I can't believe you already have flowers on a Leucospermum! 'Brandi', 'Sunrise' and the yellow one I can't name off the top of my head have buds here but look nowhere near blooming.

    1. 'Tango' is an early one. The rest of mine are all still in the bud stage--3 or 4 weeks out yet, at least.

  3. I've never broken a bone so I can't relate to that experience---but I can relate to inability to garden -mine is rain and mud issues. I feel badly for you !

    1. I don't recommend it as an experience. It really hurt when it happened. I saw stars even though no bump to the head.

    2. Trade you: my arm for the rain! ;^)

  4. Yikes, that looks painful and annoying. I'm not sure if I'd get much done with one arm. At least it would be a fairly undemanding time in our climate this time of year. But I bet you have tons to do in your milder seasons!

    1. Luckily about 90% done with winter clean up. So, more fortunate than not.

  5. The aloe photo is full of such rich color. It made my eyes happy. Your cast matches the daisy looking flower beside the aloe. It is so cold and dank here it wouldn't matter if I was in a cast or not. I am not doing much other than picking up sticks at this time. I know you must be very uncomfortable. I hope you are feeling better soon. Some retail therapy does seem in order.

    1. Everyone else there was getting a black cast. I thought pink would be much more cheerful.

Got a couple of new plants. It took my mind off the arm!

  6. Ughh! What a way to spend the best part of your growing season. So sorry. Silver lining is at least you can still wander and enjoy your beautiful garden. I think hort therapy is one of the best ways to heal quickly.

    1. It sure is nice to be out there. It's kind of warm and very sunny, with birds everywhere.

  7. One down and five to go. Bit daunting. Is it painful?

    1. Yes, yes, and yes. Pretty cranky. Hope your hand is feeling better.

  8. Sheesh! Yet you still get out there and do what you can. Weeding and some watering? Yet a dry winter...now wondering how Arizona and even my part of NM has been more wet than usual. I thought this all came from California...

    1. Gotta keep up with those weed palm seedlings, y'know?

  9. Oh no! I didn't know you fell... what a drag. Well, at least you are surrounded by gorgeousness as you convalesce. Hope your arm gets better very soon, and that you get some rain before then.

    1. Thanks, Anna! It's getting better, and we even got a little rain, too.

  10. That looks painful! Your pictures are still wonderful. And I guess you only need one hand to click on new plant purchases? Best wishes for your recovery!

    1. Oooh! You are giving me ideas. New Annie's catalogue came yesterday, you know.

Thank you for your kind wish.

  11. Five weeks...here's hoping they fly by!

  12. Arrrgh, always something we don't need, right? So sorry but I hope it won't be five weeks. At least you can shop and build up a nice inventory for planting in March!

  13. I admire your determination. But I imagine it would still be a pleasure to get outside, even with just one good arm.

    1. It is! There is growth and floral display, lots of sunshine and mild temperatures in our climate even in February, though today we're having Santa Ana winds, which = stuck indoors.
