There? You Sure?

Not there

There:
Normally I see Black Phoebes regularly and California Towhees occasionally on the patio.  Today I noticed a different bird, returning and returning.  Then I realized she was building a nest on the patio heater support, which is about four feet from the back door, which we use at least a couple of dozen times a day.
What bird is that?
We barely ever use the patio heater, so that is not an issue.
 There she is:
Maybe she's just practicing her engineering.  That's okay, too.
Sweetie, I have no problem with you there, but are you sure we won't disturb you?   We won't disturb your nest, no question of that, but didn't you observe us before you started?   I don't mind letting you have the patio for a few weeks, but...we're here.  All the time.

If she continues and starts sitting...sitting, we'll have to avoid the area for the duration.  And figure out how to get better photos.  I guess I'd better wash the windows.

Update 11:00am:  a better photo.  Pacific Slope Flycatcher?

In the meantime, some photos in better focus and better lighting.

The developing Canna flower looks something like a bird, doesn't it?
Got some of the onions harvested

That's what's here and there.

  1. Will be fun to watch your friend raise her family. What type of a bird is it? That second to last picture is stunning. Could see that as my computer backdrop.

    1. I wish her great success. She was back this morning, working away. Not one of the usual birds I see about. Puzzled as to what she is.

Thanks, glad you liked that picture. I may be finally getting the hang of this gardening stuff.

  2. They do pick the craziest spots to build their nests some times! At our old house, we had a hummingbird build her nest in the Bougainvillea adjacent to our garage. Every single time the garage door opened or closed, the nest shifted up and down. Luckily, she had second thoughts and moved before she laid her eggs.

    1. I'm wondering what will happen. She was gone yesterday all afternoon and I thought she'd reconsidered on the location, but she's back at it this morning.

  4. I have a Bewicks Wren nest on the top of my grocery bag pile on a shelf in my garage. Mom and Dad are very adept at flying in and out of the side door. I think they will fledge soon. I have aTowhee nest in a Euonymous just about at eye level. Sometimes they will build nests in my garden and think the better of it, and going elsewhere. The nest they built in Rose de Rescht was abandoned early on.

Hah! As Kris said they do pick crazy spots. We have Berwicks Wren here too, lovely little birds. I don't know where the Towhee nests are around here, but there must be some because I see them constantly in the garden, scratching through the mulch.

  5. What a cutie! It always amazes me where birds make their nests. That canna is gorgeous!

    1. She is a cutie, very dainty. Saw her catch and eat a fly, very cool!

I'm enjoying the canna. Got it last year. It's bigger this year, so hopefully more of those stunning red flowers.

  6. Loved the picture of the bird's silhouette with the clematis. She must feel very comfortable and probably loves the movement of you coming in and out. I would feel privileged that a bird chose to build her nest so close. Is that geranium rozanne?

    1. We do feel privileged. I hope she has figured out we'll be around. The fish need to be fed and the pond needs to be cleaned no matter what.

Yes Geranium 'Rozanne' one of my very, very favorite plants. Several of them in the garden.

  7. Wow a Pacific Coast Flycatcher is a great bird to see let alone have it nesting in your garden. It goes to show you have a healthy garden. I have a crazy House Wren nesting right outside our kitchen door that we use many times daily. The way I figure it they had to know this because they are very secretive about their nest building. They watch and know when you are around and your habits. The Northern Cardinal that is nesting on the arch I go through several times per day is used to me going under it. It only scares off if I stop under her. That makes her nervous. Isn't it fun to have such activity to watch and wonder about?!
Your onions look delicious. Wash window?? You mean people really do that?? ;)

    1. Lots of birds this year, it's quite wonderful. Cardinals, they are so beautiful. We do not have them here. It is really fun to have birds around. I'm happy the garden provides them habitat.

Onions are so easy. Veggies that are not so easy...don't get planted.

I don't wash the windows as nearly often as they need to be washed. I get a better view of the garden if the windows are clean, so that is a strong motivation.
